While it’s been years since the finale of John Wick: Chapter 4, it seems like fans will have to wait longer before Keanu Reeves officially signs on for a full return in the franchise.
Keanu has been doing a media tour for his latest outing, a new motorcycle documentary series called Visionaries he’s producing with Gard Hollinger. In an interview for the series, he was asked about a lingering future for his beloved assassin character.
“Oh my gosh, well there’s a version of it called ‘Ballerina,’ which is in the ‘John Wick’ world, and John wick makes a brief appearance. So, other than that, I have no idea,” Keanu said (via ExtraTV).
The new “Ballerina” movie he mentioned is the Ana de Armas-starring spinoff where Keanu makes a cameo return as the titular assassin John Wick – which is also included in the spinoff film’s full title. It’s set to premiere in June of this year.
When pressed on the subject a bit Keanu laughed and said “You know, the character’s dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4.” We gingerly touched on this subject in our review on the film.
John Wick is so immensely popular it not only spawned four feature films but a prequel spinoff TV series and the upcoming aforementioned spinoff film. Keanu and John Wick creator/producer Chad Stahelski have repeatedly toyed with the idea of a fifth film, too.
It’s perhaps this back-and-forth Keanu has with Chad on a potential fifth film that got him to immediately follow up declaring the official death of John Wick by saying anything can happen, in Hollywood at least.
“I know, in Hollywood you can… I know, I know, it’s the Hollywood story. Right now, there isn’t,” Keanu said.
