Jim Carrey is “open” to return for Sonic 4 movie, says he’s not retiring

An ongoing joke in Hollywood is when actors say they’ll retire but don’t – Jim Carrey is one such actor. Despite saying he’ll retire soon, the beloved actor said he’s “open” to returning for a Sonic 4 movie.

When asked if he was still retiring after Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now available, Carrey said “I’ve just decided instead of retiring I’m going to power-rest between projects, I power rest.”

Carrey went a bit further and even teased that he is definitely willing to return for the now-confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie.

“I’m definitely open, I’m open to the idea,” Carrey said to Japanese site Cinema Today. “Generally if they come to me with the next idea and if I go ‘oh that sounds fun’ you know, then I’ll do it.”

Carrey added, “I don’t feel locked to anything in life unless it’s something that interests me. I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, I love the fans.

“I think there’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in there and go ‘how about you do this?’ We’re all making this movie together.”

Another running joke is that much like the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, the forever-antagonist Carrey plays, Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, is constantly killed off and brought back for the next entry. The films have followed this with each iteration.

The hotly-anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie was just premiered on December 20th, 2024 exclusively in theaters.
