Jason Momoa leaves Sony’s Helldivers movie

Multiple reports indicate that Jason Momoa has exited Sony’s live-action Helldivers movie.

New reports note Momoa is no longer attached to the film, though neither Sony nor the actor has publicly explained the reason behind the departure.

Despite losing its headline star, the film remains in active development and the studio is reportedly already looking for a replacement.

Based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ massively popular Helldivers franchise, the movie will bring the chaotic war for Super Earth to the big screen.

While the original game built a loyal following, it was Helldivers 2 that exploded in popularity, becoming one of the biggest multiplayer hits of 2024 and introducing millions of players to the satirical sci-fi universe.

The adaptation remains in capable hands. Justin Lin, best known for directing several Fast & Furious films, is still attached to direct, while Gary Dauberman is handling script duties. The production also includes several key figures from PlayStation Productions and Hollywood veteran Hutch Parker.

Story details remain tightly guarded, but fans can expect plenty of alien warfare, over-the-top patriotism, and the dark humor that helped make the games so memorable.

For now, the biggest question is who will replace Momoa in the lead role. With the film still targeting a November 10, 2027 theatrical release, Sony has time to find its next Helldiver before cameras start rolling.
