Out of all the confirmations and teases that have arisen from the Consumer Electronics Show this year, I honestly think this particular piece of information is definitely one of the most interesting. I want to advise the Niche Gamer readers to read this with a tinfoil hat on, or at least with a grain of salt, as it seems Shaquille O’Neil is teasing a sequel to Shaq-Fu.
In an interview with the former NBA star, Antwand Pearman from GamerFitNation managed to squeeze in a question he probably gets asked from way too many gamers: if there would ever be a Shaq-Fu 2. To Antwand’s surprise, Shaq actually confirmed that there will be a new game, and he added “the graphics are crazy, wait until you see it, I promise you.”
You can view the interview below:
Antwand poses the question to Shaq towards the end of the video, and the direction of the interview definitely takes a turn to the hilarious side of things. If you’re too young to have played it or heard of it, Shaq-Fu was a 2D fighting game released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and the Super Nintendo back in 1994.
The game was collectively trashed by reviewers, and despite the negative press surrounding the game it gained cult like status with the hardcore gaming community. I’d rank it up there with the original Battletoads in terms of how infamous the game is, although Battletoads is generally a better game.
The most interesting bit of this tease from Shaq is that it could very well be a real game in development, previously the company that run’s his website (Mine O’ Mine) filed several trademarks for a potential sequel named Shaqfighter. It’s nowhere near as iconic of a name, but could the property rise from the ashes of despair?
