Introducing Fa’el: Beyond the Gate

Indie games have been getting very creative during the past couple of years, and anymore it takes quite a big hook to make one stand out amongst the sea of outrageous design documents floating around out there.

Argentinian developer Miguel Ángel Pérez Martínez manages to leap that hurdle quite convincingly with his upcoming game Fa’el: Beyond the Gate.

If the amusing 2.5d art style doesn’t entice you, maybe the fez-like ability to pop in and out of the game’s dimensional barriers will.

Reminiscent of Castlevania or Metroid, it is an old school sidescroller…yet with a very different twist. That twist comes in the form of a companion app that is run on your gameboy via a downloadable ROM file.

As I understand it, the companion game will unlock passcodes that when entered into the main grant you new content. If uniqueness is something prized in an indie game, then Fa’el certainly has it in spades.

Besides the official site and the Steam concept page linked above, you can also view information on its development by going to its Indie DB profile as well.
