Hayao Miyazaki cancels retirement plans How Do You Live? won’t be his last film

Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki is no longer retiring. At least according to Ghibli VP Junichi Nishioka.

Speaking with journalist Eli Glasner, Nishioka reportedly said that How Do You Live? (The Boy and the Heron) will not be Hayao Miyazaki’s last film.

“Exiting[sic] news for fans of Hayao Miyazaki. Studio Ghibli VP Junichi Nishioka tells us The Boy and the Heron is not Miyazaki’s final film and that he is already coming into the office with new ideas.”

For years, fans assumed that this would be Miyazaki’s swan song after he already tried to retire back in 2005 but came back shortly after. He then retired again in 2013 after The Wind Rises but came back for what was meant to be one more film.

Miyazaki may have simply decided the retired life didn’t suit him, or working on How do You Live? reminded him of more stories he wanted to tell. Either way, it seems we’re in for one more film from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.

Miyazaki’s latest film How Do You Live? has been licensed for distribution in North America by GKIDS.
