When development on Final Fantasy XV first began over a decade ago, the game was known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The XIII universe was originally planned as a massive, cross-genre project – that didn’t quite pan out as planned, but we did get sequels to Final Fantasy XIII.
Now that Square Enix has more games, spinoffs, and trans-media properties based on Final Fantasy XV than most game series have in their entire lifetime, some fans have been wondering if we’ll get a direct sequel to the game. You know, Final Fantasy XV-2, and not Final Fantasy XVI.
Game director Hajime Tabata struck down the possibility of a direct sequel.
“If you do that full sequel model of expanding on an IP or a series, it’s good in certain ways. The negative of that is there’s a very large open period where you’re not releasing anything,” Tabata said to Polygon.
It’s worth pointing out Square Enix has the herculean task of also working on an expanded Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, Kingdom Hearts III, their ongoing MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, Lost Sphear, and a number of other titles.
In related news, Final Fantasy XV was recently confirmed to be heading to PC. Final Fantasy XV is currently available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In case you missed it, you should check out our written and video review for the game here.
