God of War Ragnarok is the latest game from Sony to come to PC and require a connection to a PSN (PlayStation Network) account, but creative PC gamers have gotten around it.
More and more Sony titles are making their way to PC, ditching console exclusivity for the wider PC market. However Sony has remained insistent on trying to get PC gamers to sign up for their online service and create an account.
Earlier this year, Sony tried to impose the requirement on Helldivers 2, prompting a massive backlash which eventually convinced the company to give it up. The same thing nearly happened to God of War Ragnarok which sits at “Mostly Positive” but a closer look shows about 1/3 of the reviews are Negative and many of them cite the game’s PSN requirement as the reason.
Why is this 100% single player experience forcing me to sign in with PSN? I understand that some people are given the OPTION to sign in but for others ( like me) it’s a requirement. Why? When I launch the game it just says “A PSN account is required to play.” and then I can either sign in, or quit the game. WTF? I hated it when EA did it, I hated it when Microsoft did it. I EPSECIALLY hated it when Ubisoft did it (Seriously GFYS Ubisoft). And I hate it now with Playstation doing it. The difference is that God of War: Ragnarok has ZERO online features. I can somewhat understand for games that are multiplayer or have online features but a single player only game? That’s a hard no from me.
It’s possible we might see other Sony exclusives that come to PC have their PSN requirements stripped due to proactive modders.
God of War Ragnarok is available now on PlayStation and PC (via Steam). You can check out the mod to bypass the PSN requirement here on NexusMods.
