Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Arrowhead Game Studios have confirmed that they’ve been working on a reboot of the 1985 classic Gauntlet, which they’ll be releasing on PC and Steam this summer.

The game is being completely remade for a new generation, although many of its familiar features will be returning in the new version. The Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Elf classes will be returning in the reboot, and the four player co-op the series was so famous for is still there to be enjoyed. However, the levels and dungeons you progress through will be totally procedurally generated.

Check out the debut trailer below:

Gauntlet is the first game in the new WB Games Vault portfolio, which is being poised as a series of downloadable games that are “based on popular Warner Bros. and Midway brands, plus original IP, across multiple digital networks.” In case you were wondering if Warner Bros. managed to snag other classic Midway arcade titles after they dissolved, their other potential reboots are as follows: Joust, Marble Madness, Defender, Robotron, Sinistar, and Spy Hunter.

The development studio that is behind this reboot is Arrowhead Game Studios, the guys who are currently hard at work in the upcoming Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita game Helldivers. Gauntlet is set to be released on Steam, and like Helldivers, it will also feature the aforementioned top-down, co-operative arcade style gameplay.

Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, had this to say:

“To us at Arrowhead, Gauntlet is one of the most defining games from our childhoods, and it’s amazing to be able to work with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on a brand new version. Gauntlet is one of the original and best known video game properties and we are looking forward to creating a fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece.”

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s announcement also made a specific note that the game would be fully supporting “SteamOS and the upcoming Steam Machines shipping the second half of this year.”
