Few studios earned as much respect for remakes as Bluepoint Games, which is why its closure earlier this year came as a shock to many across the industry.
Now, Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda has shared his thoughts on the situation, describing the news as both disappointing and sad.
Speaking in a recent interview with IGN, Ueda revealed that he had no advance knowledge of Sony’s decision and only learned about the closure through public reports.
For someone who worked closely with Bluepoint on the acclaimed PlayStation 4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, the news hit particularly hard.
Ueda praised the team’s dedication, explaining that the relationship went far beyond a standard business partnership with the remaster of the acclaimed game.
According to him, Bluepoint genuinely cared about the games they worked on, helping preserve and modernize beloved classics for a new generation of players.
“So obviously, we had no heads-up. We’re not directly in relation with any project, so I heard about it at the same time you guys probably did in the news, and it was disappointing and sad to hear. I would have hoped that maybe in the future there could be a chance to work with them on something. So yeah, it’s very sad to hear the news.”
The Austin-based studio built its reputation through high-profile remakes and remasters, including Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. Sony acquired the company in 2021, but after project cancellations and a broader review of its portfolio, Bluepoint was shut down in March 2026.
Perhaps most interestingly, Ueda admitted he had hoped to collaborate with the studio again someday. One possibility that immediately caught fans’ attention was a potential remake of Ico, another one of his celebrated classics.
Unfortunately, with Bluepoint now gone, that possibility appears more uncertain than ever.
