Nintendo Switch Officially Announced

Nintendo has finally revealed their next home console – the Nintendo Switch.

Featured above, you can view a reveal trailer for the home console – handheld hybrid, which is set for a worldwide release in March 2017.

While the console is able to switch between a home console and a handheld, it also features a separate controller for users looking to play separately from its screen.

A variety of games were shown off in the console’s reveal trailer, including:The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a new Mario Kart game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Splatoon, and a new Mario game. All of the aforementioned games will get more details prior to the consoles launch.

Here’s a rundown on the new console, via Nintendo:

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

Never forget that Mass Effect 3, Ninja Gaiden 3 and other games were confirmed for the Wii U early on.

NG3RE turned out well but you can only call it good support when it is consistent after the console releases not when a 2011 game comes to infect more hardware.

There are a plethora of potential issues.

The bulk means it would be inconvenient to lug around.

The “power of a home console on a handheld” doesn’t mean much if the battery life on the thing doesn’t help. After all, who wants to be able to only play for a few hours on a full charge, right?

The detachable controllers can prove an problem if the mechanisms to lock them in place is damaged in some form or fashion.

Of course this is all speculation on my part, and cynicism helping things along. We’ll see how the Switch handles when it’s released.

The most appealing thing (to me) was third party support (though they only showed Skyrim and one of the many Basketball games).

It’s an interesting idea but the games they showed didn’t sell me on it. Again they are also trying to push for 3rd party support as well, smh.

The dual screen thing isn’t super integral but was great for some parts and allows for higher level play since drawing on the touch screen isn’t capped in speed like an analog stick or digital button.

Disputes going back got the N64 days, awful online support infrastructure, hardware was not the 360/PS3+ they billed it as and made for some god awful ports, weak install base that would barely even nibble at 3rd party exclusives, Wii U proved to some of them since it was as revealed that the original Wii was a fluke and Nintendo was instead more interested in continuing the ways of GameCube rather than Wii.

-I see 3rd party support drying up after a year or 2 as the already outdated hardware becomes harder to work with
-Storage will become a major issue, both on the cartridge and internal storage
-Casuals won’t give a single fuck about playing on the go, and that audience is fairly limited among more serious gamers as it stands

Just don’t see who this is targeted to. It can’t really compete with PS4/XB1/PC on a technical level yet it doesn’t seem to do much that casuals would really care about. Wii U 2.0 is pretty much how I look at it.

The one thing I will say is Nintendo’s casings have been tested well (at least during Iwata’s era). Designing hand-helds to survive dropping from table height onto a hard floor.

Yoshi’s Circuit was a retro circuit in MK8, so either this is indeed an updated version of that game, or development on the game is still in such an early phase that they have to rely on the last game’s assets this much.

I was really impressed with what I saw from the trailer. It takes the idea of using the Wii U gamepad and improves on it. Taking your console games anywhere is going to be huge for them.

Seeing people pretend as if this is just another ‘shitty’ gimmick is laughable. I’ve said this before, but I strongly feel as if people who lurk on message boards and follow gaming news don’t actually like video games. I think this is actually a bigger one than they had for either Wii U and 3DS, and in all fairness it doesn’t seem like an impossible task to retain the support of these parties this time around either:

-Remnants of Jap industry, will go either NX/PS4(/PC) or mobile/NX
-Smaller Western publishers + indies, will want their games on as many devices as possible
-Bigger Western publishers, shouldn’t cost them much to bring over their biggest titles (Overwatch, CoD, maybe Diablo?)

I have to agree. I’m often times am little upset that I cannot bring some of my games on the go with me and have to settle for whatever my handhelds can run. So this console does seem like a reasonable step forward.

However, the huge downside is that I’ve already said my good byes to Nintendo, and I’ve heard a lot of other people do the same. After the mess of having little to no big titles for weeks on end, burning their fanbase with underwhelming games in star franchises, and the whole localization mess with all their Japanese games post-Bayonetta 2 (Which we now find out has been going on for years), I don’t see this being the glorious comeback many see it as (And, what Nintendo hopes it to be).

As each little piece of the controller can be separated (they’re officially called Joy-Cons), holding it sideways gives you four buttons to work with along with an analog stick.

There’s potential here, but given the cost of realizing it chances are we’ll be disappointed if we hope for too much.

Ideally:
-It’s as powerful as the base Ps4/Xb1 consoles
-Has separate GPUs, one in the tablet and one in the dock so that home gaming runs as 1080p/60FPS and mobile can be scaled down to 720p/30 (or 60)FPS
-Has some kind of backwards compatibility with Wii U titles and 3DS games in order to replace all existing Nintendo hardware
-Battery life isn’t complete shit (extra batteries either included or available separately)

-ACTUAL THIRD PARTY SUPPORT

As far as construction goes, I’m actually not too concerned since I don’t treat my console hardware like crap but making sure the locking mechanisms last over time will be the biggest thing to look out for.

Keep in mind this is just my ideal list of features. My reasoning being that Nintendo’s biggest issue with the Wii U was branding, the idea here would be to unify their existing hardware into one console so that people have the incentive to jump ship.

From what we can see currently, any Wii U compatibility would have to be digitally and the cartridge slot looks narrower than a 3DS one. I’m still being hopeful, but I’m sure you’re probably right.

It makes perfect sense to me. Its a handheld you can connect to your TV and play as if its a console if you want to. The non-tablet part functions as a charging dock. It appears to play the same games as the Wii U, so I can’t imagine its much less or more powerful than one.

That was a good reveal.

The name is not horrible. They showcased third party support. They showed that you can play with a normal controller (I do hope they are smart enough to include it in the actual console).

The gimmick this time around somewhat makes sense with the console-handheld switch. I do something similar with cross save titles on PS4/Vita.

So far, so good. The devil is in the details – let’s see what the actual games look like and whether the handheld part will hinder third party developers. Also region lock.

For the name “Switch” meaning something? It is an obvious English word (common in other languages) which nods to the switching functionality.

The NES/Famicom and their Super successors were very honest about what they were. The Nintendo 64 pushed the 64 bit marketing enough for it to work.

Region Lock is fairly easy, all you have to do is wait for a jailbreak or homebrew while using VPN on a console or route to play is a real pain in the ass, I tried to do that to play PSO2 and forget it, it’s not something you want to do unless you really know what you are doing

Its not going to be that powerful then. Even though this idea sounds good on its face there are a lot of concerns for me. The Wii, WiiU and 3DS barely ever used their gimmick factor, the only good games on these systems would have been good on a more powerful system. Now that its a one screen gaming tablet which won’t have a new interface(touch, wands, pointers) to spice gameplay up it will have to fall back on core games on dated hardware. Not much different to WiiU.

If its Nintendo’s intention to replace the 3DS and merge these markets I think are miscalculating immensely. The DS experience is propped up by its unique software library which in turn was created by its unique market space, low cost of development on modest hardware with relatively expensive titles sold at a great margin, as opposed to mobile which is shovelware time ransoming gambling bullshit 99% of the time released for no upfront cost. If developers are forced to make big screen version of their titles then that whole section of the market has no where to go. Sony has tried twice with the whole console experience on a portable and people generally weren’t that excited by it.

Does anyone here actually think they’ll take this thing with them very often? None of these devices really fit in your pocket anymore and its cumbersome, what makes tablets practical is wallets/protectors. You can throw them into bags and not worry about ruining the screen, a big advantage of the DS clamshell design. Without that I wouldn’t take either device anywhere.

Apart from that if I want console quality games I sit down to play them, I’m not so obsessed I need yet another screen to stare at in public nor do I think they are suited for playing while distracted. It was really awkward looking at these actors trying to use this thing in half believable situations, no one acts like this.

So, two joysticks, eight or more buttons, it used those smart card cartridges and it’s mobile as well, but it doesn’t look like much of a step up graphics wise from the Wii U(doesn’t surprise me, Nintendo still don’t care about graphics or specs).

Hmm, I picked three random partners from Nintendo’s list on a whim and the first one is an audio equipment producer for racing games, the second is a mobile ecommerce provide and the third one was an online game retailer. Just looking at the list doesn’t give me a lot of confidence, I don’t recognize all of them, but the vast majority of those I do recognize are RPG producers.

I’m sure this will be a great hit with its target audience of millennials and Gen Xer’s. Yeah, I didn’t really see any kids in your trailer Nintendo, have you given up on being the family friendly company?

As for me, I’m giving Nintendon’t the finger, I don’t want this kind of console which will without a doubt for most of its game feature the forced mandatory gimmick of having to disconnect your NS and walk around with it to pass certain game sections.

i highly doubt there are any worthwhile components in the dock. since connecting for an external processing unit requires a high speed connection. unless they’re using thunderbolt port, because that thing can handle external GPU.

Its obvious their main target is the Japanese market who have been shunning homeconsoles in favor of the 3DS/Vita.
And even the western front their portables have been doing better than their homeconsoles and since Sony has all but abandoned the Vita in the West so their only competition are smartphones that are not exactly known for their quality games. (yes I know there are some good smartphone games out there but its like looking for gems in an ocean of shit and touchscreen controls will never beat a proper controller.)

So marketing wise it makes allot of sense to take some aspects of the Vita (Big screen, ARM SOC, twin sticks.) that was praised for its hardware and go from there. Even though i’m not really sold on the modular design because it looks kinda flimsy.
Personally I wished Sony would have released this docking idea for the Vita instead of that piece of shit called the PSTV.

If I had to go on a limb, I’d assume the dock only puts it on net electricity and serves as an HDMI-out, the former of which “unlocks” the device into running at a higher clock + activates active cooling.

Sort of. You see ultrabook CPU’s used more and more in small formfactor desktops like Intel’s NUC or Gigabyte’s Brix line up so its not that strange they choose that option given the overheating issues with the fat PS3 and 360.
If AMD’s Jaguar can outperform Intel’s ultrabook CPU series up is another matter though.

TBH this wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. The gimmick here seems much easier to grasp for third parties and is practically a no brainer for some games. It’s not like its “MOTION CONTROLS 2.0” this looks far easier to implement.
so things that I can see wrong: Battery life, controller attachments wearing out, What does the dock do? will there be games you can only play while docked?, how heavy is it?
But the question I think is most important of all: HOW MUCH STORAGE DOES IT HAVE? because if I can’t put a microsd/SD card into this thing for digital games that’s it, its a dead system walking.

Well no big surprises with this announcement, if you’ve been following the rumor-mill that is, a lot of us expected a hybrid console for awhile now.

What I want to know, is what killer apps they got for it, because after all, the reason to buy a console is for *gasp* playing games. Doesn’t look like the Zelda here will be any better than the Wii U version, give and take a frame or two possibly, and I couldn’t care less for anything else they shown.

If they got any massive JRPG’s coming up I may get interested, Xenoblade Chronicles X was a big selling point for me getting a Wii U. Also make it region free already.

The biggest issue is making it cheap enough so enough people buy it, while still ensuring high build quality so the thing doesn’t fall apart after three months.

The Wii U’s gamepad already was very expensive, now you have basically the same thing but with an actual dedicated gaming device inside.

I can’t imagine the profit margin on this thing to be very high, if they don’t outright sell it at a loss.

It must have taken them a lot of restraint not to put in a 3D screen, the 3DS and the WIi U gamepad were telegraphing that they had this in mind, since 3DTV failed their alternative probably was a Wii U 2 with it’s gamepad having a similar 3D screen. The modular controller and portable design makes it very very likely they’ll try VR though, they could achieve it without having to have a bunch of wires leading to your console like PSVR.

I don’t think it’s good for a company’s image to prop up their fourth system, that sold 2 mil. less than Microsoft’s first outing, as their golden boy.

Also, the Wii introduced a new demographic of people to games and made it a major form of entertainment, so I think the industry is all the better for it.

I was just thinking, they better really hope this thing isn’t as underpowered and hackable as previous nintendo consoles because if it it is, we will get an emulator for it. nintendo consoles (except the 64) have been notoriously easy for devs to make emulators of. same thing happened with the gamecube and wii with dolphin, same thing for the wiiu with cemu and decaf, samething with the ds with desmume, same thing with the 3ds with citra.

I am awaiting to play the best version of the new zelda, mario kart 8 and splatoon on the new switch emulator.

although I’ll get the console used if it’s good. which I’m doubting.

Doubling as both a home console and a portable, I agree with this being the way to go.
Many people aren’t watching tv anymore and that’s why most people get a tv, this appeases both mobile and home tv users.
Pro controller compatible.
The controls it comes with are simple and doesn’t rely on weird gimmicks for once.
The tablet screen is mostly for portability instead of adding controller gimmicks, otherwise it sits in the base while you use the paddles or a pro controller. Also good for devs since they hate making games around weird controller gimmicks.
The paddles allow local two player games from the start unlike the wiiu which only allows itself and any other players if they bring their own wii remotes.
Cartridges. Nuff’ said.
Sports games. Maybe you don’t care for them (I don’t) but many people do and a bigger audience means more games.

From what I could tell, since we don’t have full pictures of the Joy-Cons yet, the shoulder buttons compress when the controller is attacked to the tablet/grip and once removed will pop up slightly.

This seems like the most logical step from the Wii-U. I’ve always liked the concept of seamlessly switching from tv to handheld when it comes to console gaming, The components don’t look attractive but it’s interesting nonetheless. considering the amount of studio support Nintendo has, i’m looking forward to what the N Switch might bring.

I’m seeing a lot of “way better than the Wii U” as the reaction to this thing. The Wii U was an unmitigated disaster.

Seems that they’re first and foremost announcing updated ports. The Mario Kart game looks like 8 but it has King Boo and stackable items. The Splatoon game also has different hairstyles and outfits.

It seems they’ve replaced the D-pad with four D-buttons. This was likely done for the “two player/ one controller” feature they showcased in the demo reel. On one hand, I can see WHY they did this, most modern games regard the D-pad as four buttons anyway for hot-keys, but on the other it sill make playing 2D games (especially fighting games) much MUCH harder.

Because that is a very good question that doesn’t seem to have an answer. I don’t see a Disc drive on the system, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t. With the “Switch” screen on the controllers it definitely resembles the Wii U’s gamepad, but the description says that as soon as the “Switch” leaves the dock it shuts off the feed to the TV. Or is there a Wii U mode that simulates the Wii U set up.

Seriously Nintendo, backward compatibility has been one of your strongest assets at the outset of a new console. If the “Switch doesn’t have this feature it will be much MUCH harder to get people on board. Especially if it seems like we have to buy new versions of games we already own (which is what is seems like from your demo reel).

I’d rather see launch games instead of specs. Build quality and battery life is important, but game consoles live and die by their library.

Specs only matter when dealing with 3rd party multi-platform games. People hope the best version comes to the system they own.

Under-powered systems have found success with a solid library and exclusives (e.g. PS2 and DS/3DS).

Yep and people who have handhelds do as well. Handhelds are just gaming specific with better controls. The obvious function of phones aside, my phone is for the quick games that can waste 10-20 minutes and music. It is just like the camera function. The phone works if you don’t have a camera with you, but you would go for an actual camera for a better photo. Then from the regular $30-100 camera you buy a higher end model of camera, $100-400 for even better photos than that. This would be the equivalent of the PS3/PS4. It is different grades of power, graphic quality and accessories. Phones advance technologically every year true but they are still the jack of all trades. Edit: Though technically they own the one true function of phones still.

The problem here is that this was supposed to be a console- it’s not. It’s a gaming tablet that can function as a light console. It cannot have the power of an actual console in that form factor. Also those controllers look uncomfortable as hell.

And the thing about tablets is that anybody with any sense buys an otterbox first thing because of how easy they are to damage- an otterbox for this won’t be viable, since you’d have to keep putting it on or taking it off any time you slot it into its bay.

I dunno. I never hated the Wii U, because I remember all the times as a kid where I’d have to give up the tv to whoever wanted to watch something that wasn’t video games. Would’ve been great for me then.

But it didn’t take too long to realize that Nintendo was trying to force some kind of innovation for the sake of innovation, and it was causing itself to lose out on games because not everyone wanted to make games that would cater to the gimmick.

I don’t think this one is too different to the Wii U, but at the same time, it doesn’t seem to function as gimmicky as it’s predecessor, since it all does is turn into a handheld(s). Hopefully they’ve learned a couple lessons at least.

Well see my first console was an NES, shortly there after the original gameboy. I would have to disagree with you there. Just about everything concerning the Switch’s seems to be lazy or uninspired. The logo, the departure from any sense of styled console, even the controller is a carbon copy of what Ouya pumped out. It looks cheap, in other words they want a bigger profit margin… I don’t think it was a smart move tbh.

Wrong, Nintendo’s software sales are selling DOUBLE of what Sony’s entire PS4 library has and not a single one has made past double digits, i mean for fucks sake an original IP like Splatoon outsold Uncharted 4 by an extra 2 million of sales. Sony may of sold more hardware units but without good software… all you got is an empty plate (No Man’s Sky, The Order 1886, Knack etc.)

I feel like i’m the only one pessimistic about the system.

I’m PRETTY sure we’ve heard Nintendo boast about having a lot of third party support when the Wii U came out. Additionally, since the system itself appears to be playing catch-up with the PS4 and Xbox One, developers will end up scratching their heads wondering what the Switch can do that the other consoles can’t. And let’s not forget about next gen: it’s going to be overwhelmed in the same manner as the Wii U did.

Speaking of next gen, I can’t help but think that in hindsight, the more prudent move would’ve been a traditional console that can run The Witcher 3 on Ultra @ 2160p30. A system as powerful as I described would have no problems running PS4 games at 1080p60, and in the case of 1080p30 PS5 games, i’m sure we’d see em in 720p.
