Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition has been revealed to have region-locked online multiplayer matchmaking; dictated by the game’s region code.

New details on the official site for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition explain the upcoming game’s multiplayer system. Although players will have the ability to play together cross platform, players will only be able to play with players in the same region. “In online multiplayer mode, a player will only be matched with others in the region specific to player’s software.”

As such, players will be grouped only with others in their region. However, the vagueness of the language makes it uncertain if intentional cross-region parties will be able to play together.

We previously reported how the game will not support local multiplayer, due to development reasons.” The upcoming remake of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles will release all new features including online multiplayer, new end-game dungeons, and exclusive cosmetics.

Players on the Nintendo Switch will be required to have the Nintendo Switch Online service. The PlayStation 4 version will require a paid subscription to PlayStation Plus. The upcoming Android and iOS releases won’t have any subscription requirements, except internet access on the device.

A free Lite version will also be available for those who want to demo the game. The lite version will allow players to conquer the first three dungeons of the game as much as they want, and even match with other players online to do them. Those who join with someone who has the full version of the game will be able to explore the first thirteen dungeons, even if they are on the lite version.

The original 2003 GameCube game did have multiplayer, however it was local only. The multiplayer also required the use of the niche Game Boy Advance Link Cable, which let players use their Game Boy Advance systems as controllers while displaying extra information on the handheld’s screen.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition will launch August 27th for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Android, and iOS. The Android and iOS release date may be subject to change.
