Fact Check: Sweet Baby and Feminist Frequency didn’t receive hundreds of thousands from taxpayers

Update 2/7/2025 11:52 EST: The post has been deleted

A post going around X has been accusing the US Government of bankrolling narrative consultancy firm Sweet Baby Inc, and defunct feminist activist organization Feminist Frequency.

Both organizations have come under fire over the years for alleged offenses ranging from corporate meddling regarding artists’ freedom of expression, to unapologetic calls for censorship.

The post in question uses two sources to call out alleged payments to Sweet Baby Inc and Feminist Frequency. Starting with Sweet Baby Inc we’re given information from usaspending.gov, an official government website with publicly available information. You can check out the two awards here.

The two awards allegedly given to Sweet Baby Inc. are actually associated with an eyewear wholesaler which is listed as: Sweet Baby Inc., but is doing business as (Dba) A.J. Morgan located in Los Angeles. The Sweet Baby we’ve covered over the past two years is a narrative consultancy firm based in Montreal Canada.

Even if it were Sweet Baby Inc, these awards also weren’t any form of endorsement or grant, but were part of the Paycheck Protection Program under the CARES Act signed into law by President Donald Trump. These were loans from the Small Business Administration that all American businesses who qualified were entitled to.

The second source is from Data Republican, a partisan website that consolidates charity funding data. In this case, while it’s true that Feminist Frequency has received $235,220 in contributions. Only $6 of those are “estimated” to be provided by the taxpayers. The remaining $235,214 is speculatively the result of private donors and other forms of income.

Government spending is under increased scrutiny following the recent presidential election. There’s a lot to be critical of and angry about without resorting to misrepresenting the facts.
