Europe and Japan Getting Retail Version of Pokemon Gold and Silver for 3DS, Sans a Physical Cartridge

Nintendo has confirmed that Europe and Japan will be getting boxed versions of the 3DS Virtual Console releases of Pokemon Gold and Silver.

If it sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is. The packages do not contain an actual cartridge, only a code to get the game off the eShop. It does, however, recreate the original shiny cover art from 1999.

Japan, however, seems to be going the extra mile with their version. Beyond including a code for the game, it will also include stickers, a manual, a Pokedex poster, and a Game Boy cartridge magnet.

There’s been no word if North America will get a similar release. Pokemon Gold and Silver releases on the Nintendo 3DS Vitrual Console September 22nd, the same day as Pokken Tournament DX on Switch.

    Where there’s a will there’s a scam.

While this is scummy as fuck- people interested in the competitive side of Pokemon might want to know (if it was like the Red/Blue/Yellow games)- that the pokes can be ported into the modern games- gaining their hidden ability (nature determined by EXP, check Serebii). They’ll also have access to TMs they wouldn’t usually have access to.

Obviously, don’t buy a fucking box for it though.

I like the box *shrugs*. Depends on price point. Also I doubt NoA will do it because they hate their fans with a passion

Japan gets a retail version, sans the only reason to buy a retail version.

I always thought physical collectors editions of digital only games were the silliest shit.

Does anyone realize that its not just the game codes in the box?

Its not a scam, its really more for kids seeing as it has stickers, a magnet, a poster, and what I would presume is a reproduction of the original manual. I’m pretty sure they did the same thing with gen I.

I’m not seeing any reports about it being exclusive to the Japanese version, nor would I imagine NoA or NoE would bother with the additional packaging for nothing. It’d be an unnecessary cost, not to mention a waste of retail space.

I’ll let everyone know how much this will be in Australia when I get info.

Basically this. If it’s priced same as the Digital version who cares. Now if they try over selling it, yeah, then i’d see a problem.

There’s no reports about it being exclusive to Japan, but there’s no announcement, which is as good as saying it is. If they have the magnet and stuff, it should be explicit about it.

No it isn’t, that’s called jumping to conclusions. Lack of evidence isn’t in itself proof of anything.

If it were, then according to most sites the Japanese version also has nothing in it, seeing as only a few actually reported on the contents, and they’re the only ones reporting baseless assumptions.

No, but presence of evidence is required to prove a positive. Gold and Silver are going to be in a box with a download code in EU/US. That’s all we know. There is no reason to assume they will include magnets and stickers, other than Japan doing it.

We do know that Japan had the same special editions for the Gen 1 3DS virtual console games, and we know that the EU and US never got equivalents for that. That is proof against raising your hopes.

Usually, if a company wishes for you to buy their big name product, they will list as much of the contents of that product as they can. Especially in modern times, where revealing the special edition is done earlier and earlier. That Nintendo has not is noteworthy. Not confirmation against, but it is certainly not a reason to assume that they will.

That’s precisely the point, there is no proof either way, yet people are jumping to conclusion and labeling it a scam.

However, as I said before, having the box with nothing else in it makes no sense.

And while only Japan got the special editions for Gen I, both they and Europe have gotten the metal cases, but not the US.

Logically, it makes sense to expect something else is included, just not necessarily the same as Japan.

The “announcement” was only a tweet, so I would expect more info to come.
