Epic Games take neutral stance on NFTs, claim “stores shouldn’t interfere”

Epic Games

Yesterday, we reported that Mojang has rejected the use of NFTs and blockchains in Minecraft.

Soon afterwards, users started hitting up Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney on what his thoughts on the use of NFTs in games on his platform. He naturally responded:

“Developers should be free to decide how to build their games, and you are free to decide whether to play them,” Sweeney said. “I believe stores and operating system makers shouldn’t interfere by forcing their views onto others. We definitely won’t.

This leaves many with a difficult choice to make as to whether or not they believe a platform should be able to enforce rules such as an NFT ban on the developers who choose to publish their titles on their store.

NFTs are well reviled amongst the gaming community at large, and many were happy to see Steam take a stance against them, but one does wonder if it is okay for a platform to push developers to make those kinds of choices.

That being said, a platform has the right to pick and choose who it offers its service to, so it would not be out of line for Epic Games to make this sort of decision either.

In the end, if you are looking to pay for a .png or .jpeg, it would seem that Epic Games is willing to keep that door open for you while others choose not to.
