Ellen Page, Paris Berelc to Star in 1UP Movie, Described as Pitch Perfect But Esports With Gamergate Backdrop

1up movie gamergate

We’ve learned Buzzfeed is making a movie they’re describing as Pitch Perfect but with Esports, set against the backdrop of Gamergate.

The underdog “comedy” is titled 1UP (via Hollywood Reporter) and will star Ellen Page and Paris Berelc, and will be directed by Kyle Newman. This is the first feature film to come from Buzzfeed Studios, their new production company.

Julia Yorks wrote the script on the movie, and Buzzfeed’s Richard Alan Reid is producing alongside Michael Philip and Jason Moring. Paris Berelc is playing the role of a college student that quits her Esports team because of sexism with her male opponents, and Page is playing the role of her coach.

After quitting her Esports team, Berelc is potentially at risk of losing her scholarship, so she tries to get together a Varsity-grade, all-girls team that can finally compete with the boys. Page takes on the role of her coach after her own “Gamergate scandal.” Production is set to begin in Toronto, next month.
