NIS America has announced the Disgaea strategy RPG series has sold over five million copies; and are celebrating with character polls and sales.
The series began in 2003, with tales taking place in the Netherworld. Filled with monsters and demons, they mostly value strength and all things evil. Players build an army of characters, who can level up to astronomically high levels and stats, and utilize bonkers special attacks. Players can also enter randomly generated dungeons within items, to make them more powerful.
Yet, a young zombie boy called Zed waltzes into the Darkest Assembly, and claims to have defeated it. While Overlord Ivar doubts his capabilities, the secret may lie in Super Reincarnation. In case you missed it, you can find our review here.
Nippon Ichi Software President Sohei Niikawa (also the series producer and scenario writer) shared a special message of gratitude with fans, and how the series came about. While designed as a Japanese-focused series, international sales led to almost 20 years of Disgaea games.
While the sixth game has only just released, Niikawa announced another game is planned- using all the feedback from Disgaea 6. He concluded with his hopes that in the next 25 to 30 years, the series would see 10 million sold.
To celebrate, NIS America is hosting a character poll on the 5 Million Sales celebration website. Niikawa stated that this will help determine which characters will appear as bonus characters, DLC characters, and cameos in future titles.
Those who follow, tag, and comment on @NISAmerica on Twitter (before September 10th) have a chance to win a signed print by Takehito Harada, and Disgaea 6 merchandise. Extra prizes will be added if the account reaches 100,000 followers.
