Discord is coming to Xbox consoles with full voice chat

Despite signing a deal with PlayStation in early 2021, it seems that Xbox will be getting Discord call integration before Playstation consoles do. Today Xbox announced that Xbox consoles will be able to access Discord voice chat soon.

In today’s update for Xbox Insiders, players will be able to connect their Xbox accounts with their Discord accounts. They will then be able to join calls via the mobile through a new option “Join on Xbox”.

Discord has seen much praise for the audio quality of the voice chat, so this appears to be a major win for Xbox players.

“Today’s update enables a highly requested feature – Discord Voice on Xbox consoles allows you to talk with your friends and community while you play your favorite games,” the announcement reads. “Planning a few rounds of multiplayer action in Halo Infinite with buddies on both console and PC? Exploring new biomes with your friends in Minecraft? See them already playing a game that supports cross-play? Connect to their voice channel and chat as you all play.”

Announced in May of 2021, the PlayStation deal was announced only two weeks after Microsoft’s $10 billion offer fell through.

Despite the fact that the announcement was for an early 2022 release on PlayStation, many features are still missing from PlayStation consoles even as we enter the second half of 2022, including the lack of voice chat. Meaning that, despite announcing this deal over a year ago, Xbox will have voice chat available before PlayStation.
