DayZ creator Dean Hall has basically shelved his ambitious, “narrative MMO” announced back in E3 2015 – Ion.
The Xbox One game was developed in collaboration between Hall, studio RocketWerkz, and tech company Improbable, and now (via Eurogamer) it sounds like the companies have parted ways, leaving the project to be put on ice.
“We can definitely say that Improbable is not currently working on Ion. However, we have not previously commented on and cannot now comment on RocketWerkz’ current or future plans,” said a representative for Improbable. They continued:
“We are focussed on making SpatialOS available to developers, and supporting developers such as Bossa Studios and our SpatialOS Games Innovation Program partners as they make games on our platform. We currently have no plans to develop or release a game ourself.”
This echoes the change up in Hall’s professional career, as he’s moved to New Zealand from London, and his RocketWerkz studio has “has started work on a number of other games,” while also seeing their company become increasingly more of “a platform for games to be deployed on.”
Hall further corroborated this saying neither himself nor his studio are working on the game right now. He said Ion is something only possible with the “scale of technology” Improbable has.
Finally, Hall remarked that perhaps the game was announced too early, saying “Look, games get paused, cancelled, pulled back all the time in the industry. The reason why people don’t announce this stuff is because what’s the value in it?”
Since the game’s announcement nearly two years ago, Hall released the HTC Vive game Out of Ammo, and is reportedly working on a new AAA project.
