Chrono Trigger director asks fans what they want in a remake

Chrono Trigger

It seems like Square Enix might be considering a Chrono Trigger remake as their latest in a long line of remasters and remakes, according to its original director.

One of the original directors on Chrono Trigger, Yoshinori Kitase, appeared on the My Perfect Console podcast and talked up numerous things and games he’s worked on. Naturally, the legendary classic RPG Chrono Trigger was brought up.

Kitase was one of three directors that worked on the game-Takashi Tokita and Akihiko Matsui also co-directed. Kitase said he wants to know what fans want from a potential Chrono Trigger remake, and even suggested three ways the game could be remade.

The three options for a Chrono Trigger remake that were suggested by Kitase include:

  • A straight up port of the game
  • A visual remaster
  • A full remake in the scale of Final Fantasy VII Remake

Naturally, these are three very different paths Square Enix could take with a Chrono Trigger remake, while some of the options are moreso ports or remasters.

Originally released back in 1995 for the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger was a landmark RPG that helped define the “golden era” of the genre. It had a star-studded cast of staff including Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi as a designer, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama on character designs and art, all with Yasunori Mitsuda’s haunting soundtrack.

Chrono Trigger has been ported to a few modern platforms since like PC (via Steam), iOS (via the App Store), and Android (via Google Play), though it hasn’t gotten a proper modern port on consoles. It went on to spawn a sequel, Chrono Cross, and a cancelled third game, Chrono Break.
