Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is Delayed to First Half of 2018

Full Disclosure: I have financially backed Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night on Kickstarter.

Castlevania mastermind Koji Igarashi has announced a delay for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The Castlevania: Symphony of the Night spiritual successor will forgo its planned March 2017 release for one even further into the future – the first half of 2018.

Featured above, Igarashi-san talked up the reasoning behind the delay, saying: “The last thing I want to do is keep our backers waiting, but after receiving such incredible support, I feel responsible for delivering the best product I possibly can. Again, I offer my sincerest apologies.”

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is currently in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, and PS Vita.

You know what, I’m okay with this. Better one massive delay then a bunch of little delays after the other right before it looks like the game will meet its deadline. Of course this is coming from someone who didn’t back it on Kickstarter.

Agreed, rather they have a big delay and be more honest about it then well, you know that OTHER game.

It’s fine, it was well communicated, they’ve been very open, with a playable demo at this early stage and routine monthly updates with progress. I’d rather have a polished product, given how many stretch goals in-game we funded, and I’m personally invested for a significant sum in it, several hundred, for Vita & PS4 copies, boxed. They’ve been nothing but professional from the beginning.

They’re far from the disastrous trainwreck Mighty No. 9 was, Igarashi is no Inafune, he’s a class act.

  8. SpecialK
    September 9, 2016 at 10:54 am

I’m someone who backed it on Kickstarter, significantly. They’ve been very professional from the beginning, very open, and had a playable demo out very quickly, it’s been a class act. No concerns, people love to troll after the Mighty No. 9 debacle (which I never backed, as I could smell the fail coming from that long before people hype-train’d it into oblivion), but this team’s been very fantastic and open with the fandom, complete 180 difference between those past crowdfunding messes. Iga’s definitely a dude to back confidently.

This better not lead to an inception of delays.

Iga has been approached by all sorts of media companies with interest in the IP.

He said he would not do that kinda stuff until the game is complete, but I still am kinda worried that whatever stuff they make it will not leave japan.

I think an exclusive light novel or manga or whatever would be the only kind of thing that could piss me off enough to stop caring about this game.

Well, I didn’t back this, so as long as it gets released, I guess a delay really doesn’t matter to me.

Still, considering the KS campaign ended at the 13’th of June of last year, the game will theoretically be in development for almost three years, assuming no more delays. That’s a long time to wait for more castlevania!

yeh as soon as they add more stretch goals while keeping the same amount of devs, delays become almost inevitable

its kind of reassuring they pushed it back more than a year, it means they are aware of the extent of the work ahead of them, while the devs of MN9 and Shantae kept announcing delay after delay

  54. Mr0303
    September 9, 2016 at 8:47 pm

Assuming that they get more funds then they should be able to hire more people to work on the stretch goals, be that extra content or a platform port. Of course since there is no deadline define by a publisher (or anyone for that matter) devs would prefer to simply work slower and keep the money. It’s one of those Kickstarter inevitabilities.

They are at least smart enough to realise that multiple delays look really bad, so a nebulous 2018 is a kind of safety net.

I don’t think it’s a catch 22. It’s just about resource management. This should’ve been planned when calculating the cost of the stretch goals. Not to mention that they already have a publisher behind them, who can provide additional finances.

  68. Nisani
    September 10, 2016 at 8:06 am

I can’t believe people still fall for this kickstarter stuff. You have like a 1% chance it works.

The only thing I ever supported on kickstarter was that divine divinity game, since it comes from a reputable developer with a full working team, that would have finished the game regardless of kickstarter. It turned out to be the best game of the year.

But in 99% of cases, kickstarter projects are a joke.

    Mighty No. 56008
    September 10, 2016 at 11:43 am

I know it’s easy to make the comparison since it’s still fresh, but I don’t see this being another “Mighty No 9” simply because it got delayed. A couple of things to consider:

    – There was no bullcrap with the announcement. No waiting for the last minute, no denying it even though retail sites already knew of the delay, or no leaving a little footnote after an unnecessary “update”

    – Backers were informed first (or at least it seems like it) by getting a proper update sent to them

    – IGA himself made the announcement and shared some details as to why the delay was happening

You would think those things listed would be the norm, but Mighty No 9 (and I’m sure many other projects out there) can’t even do those things. So it’s rather a little refreshing to see a project being handled properly. This doesn’t mean the delay will guarantee a better game, again Might No. 9 proved that, but at least this project looks like it’s still in good shape

  72. NuclearKangaroo
    September 10, 2016 at 5:20 pm

you definitively got a point there, then again most kickstarters projects expect to finish the entire game and the stretch goals with only 5 guys in a garage
