Blizzard Adds “Ex-Boyfriend” Dummy to World of Warcraft “Because Stabbing the Real Thing is Illegal”

boyfriend-figure-stab-11-15-16-1

Blizzard has revealed new items in the latest patch for World of Warcraft: Legion, and one of them is quite the stab at the male gender.

Dubbed the “Ex-Boyfriend Dummy,” the item allows players to display a punching-bag like dummy for five minutes, with a 30-minute cooldown restriction. Here’s the tagline that is probably going to get a lot of people upset:

“Because stabbing the real thing is illegal,” reads the item’s tagline. To be clear, this item is currently on the World of Warcraft: Legion test servers, and will be made available during next year’s “Love is in the Air” world event, which celebrates Valentine’s Day.

This is clearly an in-game joke made by Blizzard, however it makes you wonder the kind of reaction they would get if the gender-focus on the item was swapped to “Ex-Girlfriend Dummy.”

It’s also curious to see a move like this when Blizzard removed a victory pose from Overwatch’s Tracer following negative feedback. Should Blizzard simply add a female version – or remove this entirely? Sound off in the comments below!

World of Warcraft: Legion is currently available for PC and Mac.

Just add an Ex-Girlfriend Dummy and I don’t care. Equality goes both ways.

After all, it’s not like Blizzard has any problem with players killing female NPCs.

Trash feminists would cry too loudly if it was a ‘girlfriend’ dummy.
Meanwhile, Lorena Bobbitt gets standing ovations for vicious mutilation because a lot of people would actually feel justified murdering their exes.

Mark Kern just said he’d be offended about this, but that would make him as bad as an SJW. I disagree, the problem with this is it continues to normalize what is already an under-reported problem in the US. Women abusing men. There are over a thousand DV shelters in the US for women, and 1, for men.

    http://www.saveservices.org/2012/02/cdc-study-more-men-than-women-victims-of-partner-abuse/

If the reporting on this were equal, I’d be all for it, however, the reporting and services are absolutely not equal.

As if it isn’t normalized already. Bobbitt got a standing damn ovation for chopping her guy’s cock off. I mean, allegedly he was a wifebeater but still. And ask any random chick what she’d do if her guy cheated (an act which you may notice is not wifebeating) – most would apparently also chop his cock off, if not some other extreme violence.

But nah, women are super persecuted forever.

To be honest, I feel like it brings a bit too much of reality that I try to avoid by gaming, into the game. The last thing I want to deal with in WoW is domestic violence. Considering it’s so regularly talked about in day to day life (news, sports etc…).

I would have objections to even a gender neutral dummy of the same kind. But, I’d just not get the dummy. This, however, clearly is in the game for a provocative reason which I find disturbing given the utter radio silence male victims of DV get.

The funny thing is that they could have easily called it ex-lover dummy and it would have worked for all sexes but no because females must constantly remind us males that they are the top of the societal food chain in the US. I wouldn’t say I’m offended more than I would say I’m sort of surprised at the audacity on Blizzard’s part to pander to feminists like this. The only reason this exists isn’t because women who have ex-boyfriends asked for it, but because feminists keep peddling bullshit about how violence against men is fine because women have it worse. If there was an ex-girlfriend dummy instead, they’d complain.

They could’ve just called it ex-lover like someone here said already.

This seems like a strange thing to include in a video game to me, especially one like WoW. Still got a giggle out of the tagline, but I understand that for some they won’t like this given the valid points pointed out in the comments of this continuing the trend of “women abusing men is amusing”.

    “Fortunately men don’t complain…”

Indeed. It’s the “man up” thing, as the saying goes.

I used to think it was a good thing because I thought it was a noble, brave and heroic thing to do.

But as I looked further into the gender wars stuff, I realized that “man up” was simply a way for women and feminists to silence men into not speaking up about their issues, so that only women/feminists can have and maintain the victimhood narrative, which is crucial for their propaganda and makes it out as if women can never be the perpatrators.

“I mean, allegedly he was a wifebeater but still.” Quite ironic that you’re putting so much emphasis on her crime and brushing aside the fact that he had abused her in every way possible for 15 years. Meanwhile males who kill guys who raped their female family members or daughters are praised by other males too. What gives? You are mistaken if you think gender has anything to do with that. People just tend to justify violence when it’s about “justice”. I don’t like that mentality however I see the appeal in it, it’s human.

    Reverse the gender roles.

What if a man has been abused for 15 years physically by a woman and he cut one of her breasts off as revenge?

Domestic violence is never right regardless of the victim’s gender. However this outrage is a bit factitious. You have to take context into consideration when you see something like this. Is slavery bad? Yes it is. Does it make a different effect on the listener if the subject of the slavery joke is black than if he was white? Of course it does. Because in our history slavery is associated with black people, not white people. Victims of domestic or family violence historically have been females, and they still are seen as possession to own right now in some parts of the world. *Please mind that I am not denying the fact that male victims exist too.* If they still want to go down this way and make a joke about domestic violence, they simply have to change the name to “Ex-partner dummy” and make it neutral.

Can you explain to me how did I do that? You mean this? “Victims of domestic or family violence historically have been females, and they still are seen as possession to own right now in some parts of the world.”
I was pointing out the fact that in our world, and it’s seen in multiple cultures too, females were (and sometimes still are) seen as inferior and to be owned by their males family members or partners.

Would you say it’s racist if I threw a banana at a white person? And would it be racist if the person was black? I’m not arguing about the fact that some can find this joke tastless, however everyone is fixing upon the sex of the dummy and asking for a female counterpart instead of the fact that it’s a joke about domestic violence and it should be “wrong” in every situation.

Keeping the focus on the gender isn’t doing anything to promote the idea that both are entitled to the same rights or that some behaviors are inherently wrong. Of course the outrage would be different, it can’t be the same as the entire situation about gender based violence was not an equal one from the very start. How can anyone be surprised about that? You change that mentality by promoting the idea that the behavior is wrong in every situation.

I just want to call you an absolute moron.

Having had men in my life experience domestic abuse at the hands of women that they loved pisses me off. Knowing that they were told to never ever lay a hand on them and still they beat them horribly pisses me off. Knowing that cheeky little fucks like you will still go around saying that their pain is nothing compared to the pain felt by women around the world right now pisses me off. Knowing that they would never come forward to the police because it just shows that they weren’t man enough to take the abuse pisses me off. Knowing that there was absolutely no way that I could have known when they were going through it pisses me off.

So when I encouraged Brandon to post this article about the obvious double standard blizzard has towards the abuse so many men in my life have experienced it comes from a place that’s Angry. You are a fucking heartless moron.

I’m sorry if my example was not clear. I did not intend to say that men can’t be victim of domestic abuse, just like the fact that white males can be victim of racism. I was referring to the sexist part of this situation. It’s not a male *stereotype* (read stereotype definition please) to be a victim of domestic abuse. If this target dummy had been female it could be interpreted as sexist because it’s a culturally accepted ***stereotype*** that involves females (be it based on real facts or not). I think you need to reconsider your tone right now and maybe try to read what I said differently.

“Knowing that cheeky little fucks like you will still go around saying that their pain is nothing compared to the pain felt by women around the world right now pisses me off.”

    I never said that?

“Knowing that they would never come forward to the police because it just shows that they weren’t man enough to take the abuse pisses me off.”

Where did I say that a man is not enough of a man if he can’t take the abuse? Did you perhaps miss the part where I said multiple times that violence is horrible and all abuse should be condemned?

“So when I encouraged Brandon to post this article about the obvious double standard blizzard has towards the abuse so many men in my life have experienced it comes from a place that’s Angry. You are a fucking heartless moron.”

Chill. I am not your emotional punching bag, I’m sorry you had such bad experiences. You don’t know anything about me, but somehow you are putting all kind of thoughts and feelings onto me just because I pointed out the fact that women have been oppressed in multiple cultures which is historically well known. Nowhere did I say anything about what you said about male victims. Why are people advocating for a female counterpart if this dummy is “inappropriate” or ridiculing how the females would react had this been a female dummy? Does it become an acceptable joke if it’s gender neutral? I’m just trying to understand the reasoning here.

Personally? I have no issue with this. Really.

Its a TOY its not like its a thing that you are forced to get and trust me, I’ve had my fair share of exes i’d like to wallop.

Like many in this thread I do feel like the Ex Girlfriend should have been an option as well, or an item to add a wig to the toy for the guys. However in the current hypersentive feminist climate that we still live in, it was not gonna happen without the usual suspects getting all up in arms about it.

But that’s not to say it WON’T happen.

This is PTR and things that are added are sometimes not included. Look at all the various mounts and such that never get added to the game. Heck they may go and add the Ex-girlfriend item as well! February is a long way away and who knows, 7.2 might be out before then and it will add yet even more holiday items.

I’d also like to point out this – http://wow.zamimg.com/uploads/screenshots/normal/167079-advanced-target-dummy.jpg

While the hair style would typically make you think male, look at the corset and the hipline of the target dummy, the original target dummy was either a transgender male, or a woman with a short haircut. Maybe the new dummy is adding a more masculine touch to it. Tho they could have done without the name and flavor text but maybe its just a light hearted jab at a gender that claims it can take a joke.

Lets wait for an official bluepost or twitter response from Blizzard before we burn it to the ground. Personally, i’m having alot of fun with legion playing a Demon Hunter and I’ve even let my FFXIV sub run out since there is so much to do.

Interesting. Other statistics I’ve found show some symmetry in children abuse, what differs is that violence perpetrated by men resulted in much more serious injuries and death compared to violence perpetrated by women. However I would not go as far to say that child abuse is equal to domestic violence because the dynamic of a relationship between adults is different. Yes, I agree that women are human too and thus capable of being aggressive and committing acts of violence in general.

Sorry, I replied to the wrong person. I understand what that article is saying, however the issue is much more complex than a few numbers thrown around by one or a couple of study in particular. There are also numerous studies that show that the method used to collect evidence about violence does not discriminate between acts of self-defense or acts that are just a display of power. Since domestic abuse is almost always related to a power/control dynamic it’s important to assess whether the violence is “self-defense” or not. Sometimes they also do not take into consideration whether the violence was repeated or escalating or just a one time event. For example if a man grabs a woman and she bites him they both would get one point towards violent behavior. Or if a man pushes a woman and she kicks him he would get one point and she would get two. It’s complex and should be looked into much more. Even the way both genders reply to surveys differs greatly.

What? It’s very hard for a muslim woman under Sharia law to prove that she was raped. It’s actually akin to her confessing to having sex or adultery. They often get killed for having been raped because “rape” is not even a crime unless the perpetrator admits to it.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Blizzard has removed animations that they deemed “too sexual” from NPC characters (the succubus etc) years ago.

They can’t introduce the female version of this as it will imply violence towards women is encouraged, and can’t remove the gender identifier because it would do the same. They will either leave as is or remove the item altogether.

Not at all, I don’t think any such thing. Why? Because there’s already a very large problem with male victims of DV in the real world. As flaming fighter alluded to below, it simply continues to make it a joke, which I personally have a problem with.

However, the difference is, I’m not lobbying the UN to have it changed. I voiced my opinion, and will not seek said item in-game. That’s how I object to something.

  127. Brian Murphy

Nah, I just think you have a couple different messages from Blizz on this. The covering up of women in Heroes of the Storm, the removal of the tracer pose, but a dummy to beat an ex with that particular tag-line is cool.

And as I already said, this is already a majorly overlooked issue in the real world. The only real coverage of DV is that of male on female violence, whereas the actual data suggests there is quite a bit of violence directed at men.

So, in my opinion (opinion being the operative word here), broaching the DV subject so blatantly, and with little regard for the unheard/unseen, it just seems wrong. Again, not lobbying the UN, just voicing my opinion.

Male victim DV is a serious and underestimated problem, but to claim that a gag item in a video game has anything to do with that would require you to take the same stance on any “offensive” content in a video game to have any semblance of intellectual consistency- which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The problem with feminists is that they aren’t paranoid enough.

Again: You don’t know what literal means, do you?

And nobody is forced to respect anything at gunpoint.

What… was… that? You sound like you hate the world because you can’t pick up chicks. Reading that rationalization of your difficulties with women seriously made my day. Thanks.

    >”lol you cant pick up women”
Because pointing out women flaws, and how society encourage those (thus making the decent women a rare breed), mean I hate them right?
Also being with the wrong woman can definitively fuck my shit up in my country laws (forbidden paternity tests, male parenthood decided by society rather than by biology, among the usual bullshit found elsewhere)

They made Sylvanas STRONK, INDEPENDENT WOMAN who did nothing wrong despite being a psychopath who almost destroyed the Horde and Alliance.

They added Fembuster Gnomes in Karazhan.

Then there’s Overwatch, and how it literally panders to sjws and feminist-douche bags.

They hired a Canadian schmuck at Blizzcon who couldn’t get the audience to like him, so he resorts to terrible Trump jokes and sjw-pandering.

Metzen deserves to rot in Hell with Bobby Kotick.

At least Wow’s subs are declining because of this Sjw shit, and how the developers refuse to see why people refuse to play it (sjw pandering, shit content, poor class balance, Garrisons 2.0, time gating).

One, it promotes physical violence towards men through an inappropriate joke.

Two, it screams of sjw pandering because if there was an ex-girlfriend dummy, sjws and feminists would flip their shit.

Three, they’re adding shit like this instead of, you know, fixing the fucking broken classes (Death Knight), or other problems killing the game like Garrison 2.0, legendaries being complete trash with terrible drop rates.

It really shows how out of touch Blizzard is.

I didn’t mind the Sylvanas armor update that much (It’s still bullshit). I’m more annoyed how they’re making her this STRONG, INDEPENDENT WOMAN WHO DID NOTHING WRONG FOR AZEROTH SOCIAL JUSTICE when the bitch damn near ruined the world and both sides. Her taking over the Horde is all kinds of unreasonable bullshit out of catering to sjws because she’s the last person who should lead it when the Blood Elf leader and Baine risked their lives to save it.

That’s why feminism is cancer. They make it all about the victimhood of women and how we should all bend over for their cause, all while shutting down and silencing people who dare speak up about legitmate men’s issues.

And SJWs/feminists have the gall to claim they’re for “equality”.

I’m sorry, so classifying an entire gender as inherently flawed because you were rejected by a few women and desperately tried to rationalize it as not because of your looks, character, or intelligence… is the reasoned stance? And “looking at female politicians” proves this? And I’m subservient to women because I don’t agree that all women are “literal children?” And your country’s laws prove that all women are children? As if that wasn’t weird enough, you pull out the Angry Alt-Right Man Dictionary and use terms that make you feel empowered when you obviously have no idea of their utter lack of proper context here.

In the contrary, I know my ways with women because I know their flaws, unlike what the female-dominated society taught you that “we’re all equal” and shieeeet. That and being also taught that being a nice guy gets you laid. Protip: It doesn’t.

And there is work to do. Covering up all those women’s qualities and characteristics by deflecting anything said about them with your feelings and statements like not “all women are like that” or “you just hate them because you were rejected” for the sake of defending the female image is only gonna stall the progress. Reality is always gonna show its ugly head no matter how much we script our perfect world and image combined with our perfect smiles.

If Blizzard had never made one move to address gendered issues in-game, I think Mark would have firmer ground to stand on. However, in several of their games, and even at Blizzcon they’ve mentioned it, and how it’s affected design choices (Alexstraza’s armor in Heroes, for example, due to a question from Metzen’s child, which he spoke about at Blizzcon a couple years ago).

That’s really the only reason I have a problem with this. Blizzard made it an issue in their games, so I expect them to be equal about it.
