Blizzard Removes Tracer Pose That Highlights Her Butt [UPDATE]

tracer-victory-pose-2-over-the-shoulder

[UPDATE]

Jeff Kaplan has made an official response regarding the Tracer controversy:

Well, that escalated quickly…
While I stand by my previous comment, I realize I should have been more clear. As the game director, I have final creative say over what does or does not go into the game. With this particular decision, it was an easy one to make—not just for me, but for the art team as well. We actually already have an alternate pose that we love and we feel speaks more to the character of Tracer. We weren’t entirely happy with the original pose, it was always one that we wrestled with creatively. That the pose had been called into question from an appropriateness standpoint by players in our community did help influence our decision—getting that kind of feedback is part of the reason we’re holding a closed beta test—but it wasn’t the only factor. We made the decision to go with a different pose in part because we shared some of the same concerns, but also because we wanted to create something better.
We wouldn’t do anything to sacrifice our creative vision for Overwatch, and we’re not going to remove something solely because someone may take issue with it. Our goal isn’t to water down or homogenize the world, or the diverse cast of heroes we’ve built within it. We have poured so much of our heart and souls into this game that it would be a travesty for us to do so.
We understand that not everyone will agree with our decision, and that’s okay. That’s what these kinds of public tests are for. This wasn’t pandering or caving, though. This was the right call from our perspective, and we think the game will be just as fun the next time you play it.
If it isn’t, feel free to continue sharing your concerns, thoughts, and feedback about this and other issues you may have with the game, please just keep the discussion respectful.
Thanks,
Jeffrey

Kaplan proceeded to unlock the thread, allowing the discussion to continue.

[ORIGINAL STORY]

If you’ve been following the community forums for Blizzard’s Overwatch, you might have run into a bit of controversy over a recent change.

An Overwatch forum user had made a thread a few days ago regarding the character Tracer. The user went on about how much they loved the character, until they brought up one of her poses (seen above), which the user believed turned her into a sex symbol.

This caused a heated debate to break out into the thread, with most users opposing the OP’s suggestion . That was until today, where Game Director Jeff Kaplan made this statement:

We’ll replace the pose. We want *everyone* to feel strong and heroic in our community. The last thing we want to do is make someone feel uncomfortable, under-appreciated or misrepresented.Apologies and we’ll continue to try to do better.

The thread was then promptly locked down.

This caused a backlash within the community, with many users voicing their displeasure over the change. One notable example is the response of a mother regarding the whole debacle.

It is yet to be seen if Blizzard will go back on their decision to remove the pose.

So how about the other people then who were ok/appreciated/liked/comfortable with the pose? They just catered to the other side leaving those people in the dust.

IT’S AN OPTIONAL UNLOCK, IT’S A PLAYER CUSTOMIZATION FEATURE

YOU LITERALLY NEED TO UNLOCK IT AND THEN CHOOSE IT TO USE IT

The official blizzard response is BS because it completely disregards that.
Everyone could already choose any option everyone wanted.

They act as if they were protecting someone’s interests here but they are not, the ones that are afraid of a butt could just choose many of the other poses.

This is an attack on the ones that would have instead preferred that pose.

Blizzard is not being inclusive here.
They are being the opposite, they’re rejecting most of their community that actually enjoyed the pose.

I just got out of a class where we were talking about the tropes behind vampires and 75% of the class starting giggling uncontrollably when the topic of sex in relation to them came up. I’ve had enough prudish attitude for the week without having to see people flipping out over a completely innocuous pose.

I’d like to be able to have at least one conversation with a group of people about this kind of thing without it devolving into immature giggling and skirting around the subject because goddess forbid we actually talk about our bodies.

Shoutouts to the mother in that last thread that was mentioned. She gets it.

Why do people continue to try to logically argue against people entirely running off emotions? All it does it make it look like there’s actually some merit to such silly ideas when the difference will always come down to “durr it’s sexualization because I don’t like it” and “it’s choosing to be sexy because I like it” and that usually boils down to whether or not they feel it’s a threat.

I don’t even see how that’s all that sexy. It’s just because she’s wearing tight pants, which are still in the game. If she wore baggy-ass slacks, no one would have even batted an eye. This is a completely and utterly stupid pose to complain about and it makes me wonder if the douche that made the complaint simply did so to light a fuse and grab some popcorn to watch the fireworks. Either that, or the person is a hopelessly over-sensitive scumbag.

    It never ends.

I wasn’t keeping tabs on this game, but I was mildly curious about it. It was something I thought “well maybe when it comes out I’ll give it a go” or whatever, but I still find that really disappointing. Why can’t a game just exist? Why can’t a game just be good?

I’m playing Senran Kagura: Estival Versus right now. I’m having fun and while I personally couldn’t care less about how naked the girls can end up getting (in fact one of my favorite things is the character customization and dressing them up rather than down) I really appreciate that the game is exactly what the creators wanted it to be. It feels like that happens less and less every day since someone has to get offended at everything.

I won’t say that I’m not buying this game now out of spite over a minor change, but I do know hearing about this has made me go from “I’ll try out the open beta in May and decide from there if I want to get it” to “I can’t even be bothered to download it.”

I know I’m kinda rambling here but it’s hard to really sum up my feelings on these constant changes. I feel like I’m just becoming numb to it all and I hate that. Even something like Fire Emblem: Fates, which was a far bigger deal, I could only barely muster up the energy to complain about. I’m just so tired of it all.

Not surprising. Blizzard has been a garbage company for the last 10 years, and this is in every aspect. From games to social crusading.

No wonder a large chunk of the old school Blizzard players have abandoned ship. The last good Blizzard release was what, Burning Crusade? I suppose SC2 is still semi-respectable, but that’s about it.

There annoying but there not That powerful most there effects have been primarily on reactionary americans , or used as cover up for other motives , The whole lauracroft thing was driven more by a desire to make it look like an uncharted clone crossed with hunger games with a cheap AAA veneer on it than Feminism , Seriously can’t see them selling that game without all the blood violence and murder porn . . At the end of the day SJW don’t really have any income and can’t really fund anything , you had one or 2 studio like Bioware that had top developer who would probably get classified an SJW and that about it . Most of the things funded at least what i’ve seen always end up economic failures since the only audience for them is the audience that believes in there narrow ideaology enough to buy those games .Bit like Christian Videos games etc .

I agree with the end goal, but that doesn’t actually accomplish it. All that does is elevate whines to a level equal to actual discussion. Any onlookers that are not already on a side don’t see “one person actually saying something and the other person spouting emotions” they see “that point is actually being discussed so it must be a valid position to take and those people just disagree.” People have taken that approach for a century of feminist “argumentation” and look how well that shit has worked out.

It’s better to just point them out as the emotional children they are than actually attempting discourse.

so you are telling me this collection of pixels cannot consent

and yet you say sexualization is wrong because you didnt ask for consent to the collection of pixels?

this train of logic is completely retarded, sure the collection of pixels cannot object to being sexualized, but she cannot object to NOT being sexualized either

so according to this logic, keeping or removing the ass is equally wrong because both decisions require the consent of the collection of pixels that cannot consent to anything

you know, this is pretty shit because, theres probably a couple of chicks who might enjoy video games and hell might even play overwatch, and they may simply not care for a little harmless ass (or hell might even want it), but their opinion isnt listened in the slightest

i will say that the original idiot that asked for this change, is not 100% wrong in the sense that atleast in their argumentation they used the lore somewhat to justify the idea that the ass pose didnt belong to the game, but the bulk of the argument relied on the idiotic “MUHSOGINY” argumentation we all have heard ad nauseum, worse yet, blizzard took the decision apparently based exclusively on the idea that the ass pose OFFENDED *gasp* one of the 7.4 billion human beings currently living on planet earth

We want to try and please everyone, even if we end up pleasing no one. Never mind the fact that almost no one was complaining about the pose. Never mind the fact that someone is going to find something about any character problematic, we need to appease these few people who don’t feel comfortable with one tiny thing in a game. God be damned if other people aren’t put off by these kinds of things.

    Video games were a mistake.

    Yeah, this is it basically.

They do not run on any bit of logic, reason or consistency, they are not even honest to themselves!

They will just throw out any accusation, or any whining and fully believe it, regardless of how little sense it does, regardless of how it contradicts other things they may say, and it’s all fueled off emotion.

Can’t argue with those but can’t ignore them either.
The only paths are the ones that manage to do both things, to attack them without giving them the appearance of legitimacy that actual arguing would provide.

One of the best ways to do that is to make them defeat themselves, pointing out their contradictions, fallacies, inconsistencies or the ridiculousness of what they say, pressing them to expose themselves by trying to dig deeper into the source of their arguments or triggering them.

Openly mocking them, but in a non aggressive way (to avoid turning them into a victim, a position they know too well how to capitalize on).

With Japan has there own unique history it hard to rile people in japanese culture over some late night anime for adults . so largely depend on what we are talking about , Puritanitcal crusades in relationships to game far as I know are mostly focused in the Anglo-Saxon culture . Brits americans and yeah swedes think they count as apart of it . France If I was to guess ( not an expert on france ) it would be conflict between muslims and north africans and mainstream french culture that a pinpoint of most of the conflict . SJWs existed in the past in the vidya industry, the issue is that social media like Twitter (which has risen since fall 2007 like a lot of other shit that happened that year which contributed to it and the fall of Internet) has given those people a voice.

Not to mention publishers and devs now crack under the pressure of having good PR (such as not being labelled by whatever buzzword those feminists/SJWs throw).

The other problem is that big name japanese publishers are now getting the external pressure of the West too, thus censoring their own titles.

Chances of hot anime girls coming in burka is very low . But stuff like Capcom and rmika that had more to do with ESRB than nutter hyper left wing puritains online . How to get it into the teen raiting . Capcom of all people doesn’t care about SJW . and the idea of making an anime or a game for some “Abstract concepts of everyone ‘ that just complete nonsense in japanese culture . The thing is that SF5 and, more recently, Star Ocean 5 (published by SquareEnix) show that even japanese folks are not even safe from the external pressure as they get the same censored versions as the West.

I also feel like the thing about ESRB/PEGI is mostly used as an excuse for translator teams to censor things directly from a game before it even came accross the rating board. And I know CERO (japanese rating board) is a lot harsher in comparison, especially for anything portraying violence.

But again rating boards also seem to be inconsistent. You can have gruesome games like Corpse Party or Hayarigami making their way on consoles in Japan (D and Z rating respectively) but also games like Killer 7, No More Heroes and the Biohazard/RE serie being heavily censored on violence there. Pretty much like how Ar NoSurge managed to get its way in the West uncensored with only a T/PEGI 12+ rating while other JP games with lewd content have to be censored and still often get the highest ratings in the end.

The PC platform makes things easier for ratings though. But japanese gamers arent fond of that platform besides for VNs or doujin games that can run on any toaster.

“feel uncomfortable, under-appreciated or misrepresented.” Who is it misrepresenting? Tracer? Because tracer doesn’t represent me, neither does Lora Craft, Bayonetta, or Chun Li. When playing as a character listen to the sentence “playing as a character” they represent themselves.

Jeff Kaplan posted more and unlocked the thread. Have fun kids.

    Thanks,

    jeffrey

Just check out one of the other articles posted already this morning regarding a character in Star Ocean 5 having to wear panties your grandmother would probably think are conservative to appease these people. I’m not saying she should wear a G string and dress like a Brazilian beauty in a Carnival parade. I am saying it shouldn’t matter. Just like it shouldn’t matter if the character Tracer has a cheesecake shot showing off just how tight that flight suit is. However it does matter to the people complaining about shit like this and it is clearly having an effect. Hold the line or let them run it. Your call. Better to squabble over petty shit like Tracer’s bum today then take on a far more serious fight tomorrow.

I haven’t visited Blizzard’s forums in *ages*, but when I was lurking there, I remember them saying they *do not* take suggestions from players. They’re not interested in their suggestions, as they’ll always be derivative of something else and Blizzard is trying to be their own thing.

What happened to this? When did Blizzard start listening to its players? Why are they doing this? It’s clearly cancer. You mean to tell me that a character designed with ass straps to enunciate her ass goes out of character when she flaunts her ass? What’s wrong with a playful character flaunting, anyway? She’s still being playful.

Or what, the fucking sociopath poster can’t see a girl’s ass and not think of sticking something inside it?

You see, the issue is that anime tiddies, as a collection of pixels, cannot consent. For all intents and purposes, this collection of pixels is to be regarded as a human being. The line between fictional character and a real human is blurred, because SJWs are psychopaths. I’m not even joking and I doubt anyone would say I’m exaggerating. They treat fictional characters as real humans who never act on their own. However, they’re forgetting that not only means being sexy in fiction is wrong, but a character doing *anything* in fiction is slavery to its writer. So, the logical conclusion of social justice becomes the destruction of fiction involving living things.

Not to be confused with all religions of old, who held similar positions. The reason why portraying living things is forbidden in Islam is very similar to what I wrote above.

SJWs are not merely regressive in that they want to take us back to the 19th century. They’re regressive in that they want to take us back to the 4th.

Only logic I see here is that it’s a cross-demographic game with a Teen rating. I can sort of understand this in a way, if it were a single player game aimed toward specifically a male demographic and people decided to try to censor it, I’d be pissed. I absolutely hate how games get lambasted for the “sexualization” of characters, I’ve seen good, solid games that were fun and had amusing characters get low ratings or get censored just because the characters themselves had skimpy clothing. Seriously, it’s ridiculous; even if you try to hide this sort of thing, kids will find out about this stuff regardless, cable has existed for a good long while now, as has sexuality.

The more you try to repress this kind of stuff, the more of a problem it becomes.

I can appreciate the idea that young girls have a strong role model with not too much sexual connotation, but the pose wasn’t even bad.

The easy way is to just have the game have a client-side option to change it. It’s goddamn easy, just have two pose and appearance settings; call them “Traditional” and “Advanced” or something. If people want to live in a bubble, let them; but there’s no reason to subject everyone else to it.

This isn’t even about the pose anymore, it’s the message, the idea behind it and how it has set, it’s not only a precedent, but it also shows that someone isn’t listening. I’ve regained faith in Blizzard after certain events, thinking that maybe they were doing fine and all, but after the removal of an Easter egg and…

    This reply here:

    http://i.imgur.com/GK4dbhk.png

I feel that this is nothing but damage control. If the intention was to make a new pose (and replace this one) because you guys talked about this before, you would have told us exactly that, instead your reply was this:

    http://i.imgur.com/5lnYvhX.png

You chose to remain silent on your “real reason” and cater to the first poster (which has nothing to do with your second reply), which was the only poster that actually thought the Tracer pose was a problem.

You claim that in the future you will add new poses. Well, why can’t we also have this one besides the “new poses”? Why was it so hard to include this one and have people pick whatever they’d think wouldn’t “offend” them?

For me, all of this is a bundle of contradictions or simply someone not thinking things through.

You can say “But it doesn’t fit Tracer.”, you can provide a million reasons for why and I can post mine the same (e.g. generic Heroic pose, Tracer was always the quirky hero character. Tracer’s quirkiness can be seen through her smile.), even if it wouldn’t, why not let us have the options we want? Is customizing our character bad in any way?

And maybe I am wrong on this matter, but I don’t believe you can say that to each one of the other fans too:

A developer is almost always either going to stay silent or say that they made the change of their own volition, whether that’s true or not. It’s very rare that a developer will own up to being pressured into something, that’s just not how PR does things. So the question here is whether you believe Jeffrey that Blizzard were going to make a change anyway or you think he’s lying and they caved to pressure. I obviously can’t say for sure, but if I had to wager a guess, I’d say it was the latter. I’d also say that I don’t reward cowardice, but in my case I guess it makes no difference since I haven’t bought anything from Blizzard in over a decade and had no intention in buying this anyway, so this changes nothing.

    March 29, 2016 at 1:27 pm

The pose makes me uncomfortable and I’m glad they removed it. Let me explain why.

The reason is because I am not a slim and attractive woman. I do not get the attention that this fictional character would get. I often wish I was beautiful and attractive, but I am not. So, when I look at this character it is a reminder of how I am envious of her beauty and ashamed of myself. And these negative feelings of envy make me feel bad. They make me uncomfortable. I am uncomfortable because I am insecure with how I feel about myself.

SHIT WHAT AM I SAYING!?!? i meant to say SEXUAL OBJECTIFICATION! BODY SHAMING! RAPE CULTURE! PATRIARCHY!!! Gaaaaaahhhh!!!

But seriously. You kids today go to such strange lengths to lash out at the things that make you feel insecure or ashamed. This has always been a human quality. But when the current generation encounters anything that pangs at their insecurity and produces feelings of negativity, they will say anything to make it the fault of that thing rather than admit that they simply do not like something about themselves.

I really think they are not even conscious that they are doing this anymore. They may honestly believe that if something makes them feel ashamed, then it is always the fault of that thing. But shame comes from within.

My advice to kids today is that if something makes you feel envious or insecure or ashamed, use that as a way to think about how to BETTER YOURSELF rather than waste energy to blame that thing as the cause of these negative feelings. There will always be people more attractive, more successful, more popular, larger penis, etc. Either work on the things you can change about yourself so you like yourself, or GET OVER IT because we all feel envious at times.

But now we’re attacking cartoon women over our own insecurities and it’s insane.

    That’s the funny part.

Out of context, there actually is a decent argument to be made here – the pose IS rather boring and uninspired, and no, the character probably wouldn’t really suffer if she put on some cargo pants.

But that is also the point: If it’s such a non-issue either way, why change it then? I’d think that most people aren’t despearate to #FreeTheButt here, they react on principle and against precedent. One can cry ‘slippery slope’ all day, but the fact remains that it’s not a fallacy if the same dynamic has been demonstrated over and over again: Give the puritans a finger, and they WILL go for the whole arm next, and chide You all the time while at it for being immature and making a big fuss about nothing while simultanously accusing You of sexism and misogyny.

I’m one of the people who is more or less indifferent to fanservice of all kinds, it doesn’t do anything for me, but it doesn’t take anything away short of my ability to recommend something to those who automatically disregard something entirely due to a connotation *of which there are many*

I wouldn’t mind it if the more extreme companies dialed it back, but that’s entirely up to them. I don’t think developers of anything should cater to anyone. If a product is to be made, it should be made on the developer’s own volition; it’s up to the audience whether they like it or not. I mean, isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?

Let’s look at it this way, World of Warcraft was built initially on a vision, the original game was created entirely on the will and care of the people who created it. Based on the Warcraft RTS games that came before it, the pitch was just to make everything bigger, more immersive and to create a massive world for people to explore in.

Once fan input came into the picture, things were changed drastically; the game barely even resembles what it originally was. Blizzard pandered to so many complaints, which was a big reason why the soul of the game has become so tarnished over the years. It doesn’t feel like a persistent world where you meet people and overcome the obstacles that were there, and if you didn’t like them; you just dealt with them as if they were part of the game, it just feels overly streamlined and designed with a particular flow in mind.

Admittedly, this is good business because it seemed to allow for another demographic which wouldn’t be throwing money at them to join; but the precedent was set, and the game just became more and more streamlined as years went on. *no, the game isn’t bad in my opinion; I just think it would have been better if Blizzard had just gone the way they wanted to with it without any fan input*

Games largely are no longer developed by game developers with a vision, they’re developed by game developers trying to make a large amount of money by taking fan opinion into account. Fans aren’t game developers, and frankly they barely ever know what they want. Whether it be a pose or an inconvenient game mechanic, the industry would be better as a whole if “fan input” was a very, very distant afterthought and the developers themselves were the ones who decided everything; they’re the ones who create the experiences.

I sure hope you can’t see the men in the over the shoulder (75). I guess it doesn’t have to be naked women or women in sexual poses huh? Now it’s just we can’t look at women? Cause women have butts. Wait they have boobs too! So we shouldn’t show them from the front either. Let’s just take them completely out of the game all together. This is getting so stupid…

There’s nothing wrong with having sexy characters in sexy outfits. I don’t like the pose either though, just because I think it’s a dumb looking pose.

I like her regular, forward facing pose. It looks way nicer and fits the character.

Well if she cannot consent then obviously ANYTHING done “to” her is done *without her consent*, and we all know no consent = rape, so basically Blizzard was raping her.

Gosh, You misoGGynists just don’t get basic logic. Sheesh. Harrumph. And other sounds of disapproval.

I’m glad we agree on this one. I discuss it on a blog and I will be glad to see some of your feedback there. I’m sure I will learn something and write a better post next time as I watch this little affair thoroughly. Thanks for your insight people. http://bit.ly/1q1l8Hh

IMO the new trailer puts some truth to the words of Kaplan, the pose was originally used on every character, it had no animation on it and I present Exhibit A (for A fine booty) https://youtu.be/ZyBUMabtslI?t=332 this is not the pose you use on a character who’s ass is getting permanently side-lined because of one forum idiot.
