Beau is Afraid gets first trailer showing Joaquin Phoenix’s nightmarish trip home

Beau is Afraid

Beau is Afraid has received its first trailer with Joaquin Phoenix as the titular Beau, and boy is he in for a nightmarish journey home.

Produced by A24 and both written and directed by Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), the film follows Beau as he flies through a lifelong tour-de-force of emotions, on a visit to his mother.

While there are naturally spoilers in every film trailer, this look at the film looks at the horrors waiting Phoenix’s protagonist, and seems to take place in the past and present. It’s also perfectly matched with the excellent Supertramp song Goodbye Stranger.

There’s brief flashbacks to his childhood on a terrible family cruise vacation, present-day therapist abuse, and some hectic action while Beau tries to escape, and even dream-like segments with the troubled lad walking through a fictional forest.

Here’s the new trailer:

Phoenix stars in Beau is Afraid alongside Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Richard Kind, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, and lastly Armen Nahapetian as the younger Beau.

“From his darkest fears, comes the greatest adventure,” reads the film’s tagline. Beau is Afraid premieres only in theaters starting April 21.
