Bandai Namco Lets Japanese Creators Use Galaga, Pacman, and Other ’80s IPs

Bandai Namco has announced what it’s dubbing an “open project”, in which domestic creators will be able to use some of the company’s IP which gained popularity in the 1980s, including Pac-Man.

Starting in April, creators will be able to use characters and music from 17 of Bandai Namco’s intellectual properties without supervision. The only oversight Bandai Namco will have on games created under this initiative is a “project review”.

The 17 Bandai Namco IPs available through this project are:

  • Adventure of Valkyrie
  • Battle City
  • DigDug
  • Dragon Buster
  • Galaga
  • Galaxian
  • Genpei Touma Den
  • Mappy
  • Pac-Man
  • Shadow Land
  • Sky Kid
  • Star Luster
  • Tower of Babel
  • The Tower of Druaga
  • Wagan Land
  • Wonder Momo
  • Xevious

If creators want to make money from the games, they’ll have to pitch the game to Bandai Namco, and agree to share revenue with the publisher-developer.

We’ll let you know if anything interesting comes of this.
