3D Shovel Knight game still in development

3D Shovel Knight

Following the release of Mina the Hollower, Yacht Club Games’ follow-up to their breakout hit Shovel Knight (and its four DLC add-ons), the studio took to Reddit for an “Ask Me Anything” post.

Fans of the developer flocked to the comments to hear about Yacht Club’s newest title, and asked about what could be next for the fan-favorite studio.

One commenter followed up on a previously-teased 3D Shovel Knight project, asking if they had hit the brakes on a potential reimagining of the classic 2D platformer title.

“The team shifted focus and banded together to get Mina out the door, but development on our 3D title never stopped. It’s looking amazing, too. We think it’ll knock everyone’s socks off once we’re ready to talk more about it. For now though, Mina’s our main focus!”

So 3D Shovel Knight is still in the works, despite the attention and excitement surrounding the company’s newest IP, which has already sold well over 300,000 units across multiple platforms since release. In an interview with Bloomberg, the company shared that the new title was “not far from being showable”.

Shovel Knight was a massive hit when it first released, putting Yacht Club on the map and giving the team a recognizable character to tie to themselves.

A masterful love-letter to the retro-style 2D platformers and sidescrollers of the 8 and 16-bit eras, Shovel Knight was praised across the board as perhaps the tightest experience of its genre.

The series has since released a number of spinoffs like Dig and Showdown, as well as free DLC adventures in the Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove package. Not an easy act to follow.

If Shovel Knight was Yacht Club’s Mario equivalent, that naturally makes Mina their Zelda counterpart. Just as is the case with Nintendo, the arrival of a new Zelda title does not mean that innovation in the flagship Mario series goes on hiatus.

Clearly still in the early stages of development, it’ll be fascinating to discern this new 3D project’s sources of inspiration. For now, we wait for that first glimpse.
