Sebastian Maniscalco Reveals He Will Voice Spike in Super Mario Bros: The Movie

Super Mario Bros. The Movie

Actor and stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco has revealed he will be voicing “Spike” in Super Mario Bros: The Movie; possibly Foreman Spike.

Announced in January 2018, details on the movie’s plot and cast have been all but non-existent. One character and cast member has leaked; Foreman Spike from Wrecking Crew. He will be voiced by Maniscalco (The Irishman, Green Book, Tag).

Spike was an enemy in bonus stages, attempting to grab more coins than the player while smashing walls and doors to hinder them. He later appeared in Wrecking Crew ’98, building Bowser hideouts. Aside from Mobile Golf, he has had minor cameos in NES Remix, NES Remix Pack, Super Mario Maker, and WarioWare Gold.

Maniscalo appeared on Bertcast, wherein he revealed he was voicing the character later that day. He describes Spike as the Super Mario Bros. boss. Nintendowire notes this lends more credence to it being Foreman Spike rather than the Spike enemy (the green turtle-like enemy that hurls spiked balls and bars).

While Spike could be an entirely original character, Manicalso’s heavy Italian-American accent would be ideal for another human that appears alongside Mario and Luigi. In addition the brothers were in from Brooklyn, New York in the American The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! While Maniscalo grew up in Chicago, many of his mannerisms heard in the podcast could be interpreted as coming from New York.

If the brothers needed a boss, plumbing Nintendo’s depths and using Spike would be ideal. He may serve as a minor antagonist, giving the brothers grief before the pair end up on a more fantastical adventure. We will keep you informed as we learn more.

Super Mario Bros: The Movie premieres September 2022.
