Rocket League Dev Psyonix Ends Linux and Mac Support

Rocket League

Rocket League developer Psyonix have announced they will no longer support the game on Linux and Mac after the next update patch.

The announcement only came through Steam, and as of this time of writing not the developer’s official Twitter or the Rocket League official Twitter. The Steam announcement stated the following:

“As we continue to upgrade Rocket League with new technologies, it is no longer viable for us to maintain support for the macOS and Linux (SteamOS) platforms. As a result, the final patch for the macOS and Linux versions of the game will be in March. This update will disable online functionality (such as in-game purchases) for players on macOS and Linux, but offline features including Local Matches, and splitscreen play will still be accessible.

If you purchased Rocket League for Mac or Linux on Steam, the game will still work with full functionality when installed and played on a computer running Windows 7 or newer.”

The supporting article on the Rocket League official website goes into more depth, citing that “adapting to use new technologies […] made it more more difficult to support macOS and Linux (SteamOS).”

The final patch for Mac and Linux (disabling online functionality) shall come in early March. The website even recommends third party tools such as Apple’s Boot Camp and Steam’s Proton app or Wine to run the Windows version of the game on Mac and Linux respectively.

In May 2019, Epic Games acquired Psyonix, and in August would remove loot crates from the game (much as Epic Games had with Fortnite). Some have speculated the decision to abandon Linux and Mac may have been due a decision made by Epic Games. As of this time of writing, Rocket League is not on the Epic Games store.

Rocket League is available for Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Linux and Mac versions will no longer supported as of the next patch update in early March.
