We’ve learned the live-action Akira movie is possibly not happening now, as Warner Bros. has delayed the film indefinitely.

The movie was set to begin production this fall, only now director Taika Waititi just signed on to direct the fourth Thor movie, putting the Akira movie on hold (via Variety).

Waititi was reportedly going through the process of selecting two lead roles in the film, of which he was surprisingly aiming to cast Japanese actors. Following the indefinite delay, the new report claims “more creative disagreements over the project” have arisen, meaning the film may never be made.

Original Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo recently announced he is remastering the original anime film in 4K, as well as producing a new anime series based on the original Akira manga.

The live-action Akira movie was also supposed to be based on the original manga, however shooting was planned to all be done in California, and with a story bizarrely set “in the rebuilt New Manhattan where a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment.” The film was also planned as two movies, each of which adapting three volumes of the manga.
