Manga creator and anime legend Katsuhiro Otomo has announced a new anime series based on his legendary Akira manga, as well as a 4K remaster of the 1988 anime film adaptation.

While details are scant, the anime series will be produced by Sunrise, and will cover the entire manga story, including key points that were not featured in the original film. A brief teaser was shown at the Anime Expo panel.

Featured above, a 4K remaster of the original 1988 anime film was also announced, alongside the teaser. The 4K remaster of Akira is launching on April 24th of 2020.

In related news, Otomo also announced his next feature length anime film – Orbital Era. You can read more about that here.
