Niche Spotlight – Eagle Island

This is Niche Spotlight. In this column, we regularly introduce new games to our fans, so please leave feedback and let us know if there’s a game you want us to cover!

Today’s Spotlight is Eagle Island, a falconry-based Metroidvania with roguelite elements by Pixelnicks and Screenwave Media.

You play as Quill, a brave young explorer accompanied by his owl companion, Koji. Together, you’ll explore ancient ruins on your quest to confront the giant eagle deity Armaura, who stole your other pet owl. The game’s dungeons are procedurally generated like in a roguelite, but the game can be played as a more traditional story-driven action-platformer without permadeath. You can check out a trailer above.

The game’s combat involves sending Koji to attack enemies and build up combos. Missed attacks mean there is a longer delay until Koji returns, leaving you momentarily defenseless. You can also imbue Koji with different elements to strike at your enemies’ weak spots.

Eagle Island is available on Windows PC, Mac, Linux (all via Steam) and Switch for $19.99. There’s also a free demo.

Here’s a rundown of the game:

Discover the avian world of Eagle Island with Quill and his loyal owl companion, Koji. Explore lush forests, treacherous caverns, and uncover the ruins of long lost civilizations on your way to confront the gargantuan deity, Armaura, in a desperate attempt to rescue Ichiro from her clutches.

With its falconry-inspired gameplay & uniquely generated worlds, Eagle Island is set to a beautifully modernized pixel art aesthetic and provides a breath of fresh air to the character platforming genre.

Taking inspiration from the roguelite genre, Eagle Island can be enjoyed both short runs or a longer story based experience.
