We previously reported on free-to-play games for the Nintendo Switch apparently not requiring a subscription for online play, which Nintendo is launching this fall. The company has responded to Niche Gamer with a clarification regarding online-supported games, and whether they require a subscription or not.

“Not all games require a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play online,” Nintendo of America stated. They clarified this a bit in regards to premium or paid games that have online play:

“A Nintendo Switch Online membership will be needed to participate in co-op and competitive online features for many current and upcoming Nintendo Switch games, such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Mario Tennis Aces and Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido.”

While this doesn’t explicitly say free-to-play games are exempt from requiring an online subscription, it certainly would make sense for that to be the case.

The Nintendo Switch Online service launches this September.
