Bungie Gets $100 Million Investment from Chinese Company NetEase to Make New Franchise

While Bungie is still making new post-launch content for Destiny 2 (pictured) like its new “Warmind” expansion, the Washington-based developer has received a massive investment from a Chinese company to build an entirely new franchise.

Chinese firm NetEase (similar in scale and products as Tencent) has invested $100 million into Bungie, news confirmed by the Halo and Destiny gaming developer over on their blog. While details weren’t confirmed, Bungie said they hope to grow as a game developer so they can launch and maintain “many worlds simultaneously.”

Naturally, Bungie said this new project and expansion of the company won’t affect their development on the Destiny franchise. NetEase confirmed they acquired a minority stake in Bungie as part of this investment deal.

“We’re excited to announce that we’ve entered into a new partnership with NetEase to help us explore new directions,” Bungie said on their blog. “With their industry expertise, they’ll empower us to build new worlds and invite players, new and old, to join us there. They’ll help us support separate teams inside Bungie to bring our newest ambitions to life.”

NetEase, like their competitor Tencent, have been investing in western companies to foster new content and gameplay concepts around the world – while also bringing in western games to the massive Chinese gaming market.

Destiny 2 and its recently launched Warmind expansion are now available for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
