New Crew and Ship Details for Beyond Good and Evil 2

Ubisoft shared new details for Beyond Good and Evil 2 in a new new developer diary.

The hour-long live stream featured various members of the Ubisoft Montpellier team going over the game’s focus on sci-fi piracy, including its ships, crew, and more.

Here’s a selection of various blurbs from what was shown, via Eurogamer:

  • The team showed off a gallery of new animal hybrid character concept art, and then a working in-engine 3D model system which lets the team create animals of various hybrid qualities – a bit tiger, a bit elephant, a bit male, a bit female, a bit large, a bit small, and so forth.
  • There was also a showcase of spaceships in all shapes and sizes which can be heavily modified.
  • Ancel confirmed it can be played in single-player, but the team wanted to invite you to play it with friends.
  • A part of the story will be the story you tell as you meet and play with friends. There will of course be traditional narrative-lead stories “with a beginning, middle and end, with strong characters, which will emotional.”
  • Ancel referenced a storyline concerning sweary chimp Knox where you can go to his planet and meet his family. They will look like him, Ancel said, because of the game engine’s ability to create animal hybrid characters which look like others – which share “DNA”.
  • The engine’s other big focus is for it to support your seamless transition from a small teahouse in a city somewhere where you can drink a cup of tea, to a giant spaceship in space.
  • Since E3 the team almost tripled in size. The main focus for people on the team [currently] is to build a real, vibrant city for people to explore.
  • The livestream concluded with a fan Q&A session. First up, was a question on whether BG&E2 being a prequel had always been the plan – it wasn’t. The first idea for BG&E was to make three games, a trilogy. When thinking about the next game we thought the [series’] world was so big, so dense it would be a shame to not talk about its origins. Who is Jade? She’s very mysterious. She has a dark side. We want to go deeper into these things.
  • Ancel appeared to suggest the series might someday move forwards, past the original BG&E, however: “And will continue going through the episodes, the stories of this world,” he added. “But we wanted to start with a prequel.”
  • On having an AI character like the original BG&E’s Secundo, Ancel was more definitive. This time around, your crew will help progress the story, rather than chat with a AI helper. “Secundo was a real character – an AI character – but he existed in the game,” Ancel said. “Here we want [to feature] the crew members, the officers, you will meet on your journey. Like Pey’J and Double H. We don’t want to force an AI – we want players to meet characters. A bit more digital and a bit less physical.”

Development platforms for Beyond Good and Evil 2 were not announced.

Here let me translate this bit
“When thinking about the next game we thought the [series’] world was so
big, so dense it would be a shame to not talk about its origins..”
“When thinking about the next game we thought it’s been over a decade since the original that hardy anyone bought, so falling back on “origins” let’s us soft reboot for new audiences while hooking in the tiny fanbase with the 2 attached to it who will rewarded with a 2 second tease of Jade post 2 hours of credits.”

    allow me to transate:
    >the team showed us a bounch of zootipia concept art rippoff
    >we have custom space ships now, cus fans of stealth zelda like game sure want to play Not Ster citizen
    >the first game was single player but we’re shoehorning multiplayer cjust for shekkels
    >you make the story yourself (so we won’t have to write it) by farting around with other online player, or by talking to one of our many relatable characters
    >you like our nigger chimp? we have a planet full of nigger chimps just like him, as randomly generated as the planets in No Man’s Sky
    >muh open world engine
    >since E3 our budget almost triplicated (not to hard considering it was vaporeware before E3) and we’re having them do another one to the pile of amrphus ubisoft openworld cities
    >fans of the first one have waited more than a decade for a conclussion or at least some explaining, but we’re tossing all that around cus we wanna do nigger kong starwars
    >we want to make generic yearly sequelks with this IP
    >who cares about Secundo? he was an italian stereotype, now you have a progressive crew to talk to

As expected they showed some character and ship models and brainstormed
about the game. The openness of the development is a rather interesting
approach, since this isn’t coming any time soon.

I think I’d have been happier had they just let the original game rest in it’s grave. For pity’s sake Ancel, what have you done?

What does any of this have to do with Beyond Good and Evil?

Oh and the game is still in it’s “Conceptual Phase,” meaning everything they just said about what this game is going to be is completely meaningless because it can all change with one boardroom meeting.

Also, getting fan feedback? Yeah, cause that worked out so well for Mega Man Legends 3 and Mighty No. 9, Don’t come crying to me when your game comes back and it is either an overly ambitious mess or is flat out cancelled due to a lack of fan interaction.

Reminds me of Mass Effect Andromeda which was still using character models and debug/dev tools to promote the game when it was less than a year away from release, no joke this was their E3 2016 trailer
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk_s2oPlTKY
Contrast that with a trailer for the original ME from E32006
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Li2MIGxOww
They sell you on the game there and not their dream of what it might turn out to be like Peter Molyneux knockoffs.

I think we need more spiritual successors and less unrecognizable sequels.
