Deus Ex Will Probably Return After Eidos Finishes Marvel Game, Discussions Already Happening for Next Deus Ex Title

Despite being critically acclaimed and selling well, Square Enix decided to put a hold on their Deus Ex reboot franchise and assign the studio, Eidos Montreal, to a big juicy new contract for a multi-year and multi-game deal for various Marvel Comics adaptations.

Because of the big shift and investment of resources into this new deal, many Deus Ex fans were concerned the series was done for – quietly killed off for something that might sell like hotcakes in comparison. Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda has gone on record to squash these fears, at least for now.

“We have never said anything about discontinuing that title,” Matsuda said to GamesIndustry.biz when asked whether or not the Deus Ex franchise was over. “But for some reason that’s the rumour out on the market.”

Matsuda also noted that while Eidos Montreal “has always” been in control of modern Deus Ex, the publisher has a lot of big AAA titles to put out and as such, has to schedule which big new title to release that year, quarter, and so on. “The fact of the matter is some titles have to wait their turn,” he said.

The Square Enix boss went on to note that Deus Ex is a “very important franchise” for Square Enix, and that key staff within the company feel its first-person perspective alone makes it a standout title in their portfolio. He also noted that they’re already having discussions on what direction to take the next game in the series.
