That’s the Smash Bros announcer guy. What the fug is he doing here? Not that I mind. His voice is wonderful.
On another note, besides Xander, I’ve never heard of these VAs, and Xander isn’t exactly overused, so this is pretty sweet. For once you’re not having to hear the same voices over and over all the time. New talent is great to have.

October 19, 2016 at 11:47 amI’ve heard talk that the reason AtlusUSA doesn’t include original audio in their games, is because
Atlus Japan is absolutely terrified of reverse importing,
which is also the reason P4 arena was region locked,
and why Ultimax wasn’t region locked, but didn’t include dual audio.
Or you can just go with my theory:
Atlus USA is cheap.

Atlus USA had a survey on their twitter about dual audio.

Atlus USA has never mentioned said survey again, or if it had any effect on their choices to keep not including original audio in their games.
The theory is, that they saw people overwhelmingly being in favor of dual audio, and decided to quickly pull the plug on it and sweep the survey under the rug.

October 19, 2016 at 3:23 pmYou are incredibly incorrect. I have a 3.50 PS3 with CFW that’s fully capable of playing PS3 backups (which I’ve used to play Vesperia and Onechanbara Z). Despite owning that, I’ll still get it on PS4.

October 19, 2016 at 3:57 pmOh boy, another game for Atlus to pass off their English cast as “just as good” as the original dub despite this time the game having a star-studded cast of Japanese voice talent.
While I don’t see anyone I massively dislike, if dual audio isn’t available I’ll likely just import and use a translation guide for the text since this isn’t a game I want to play with voices muted.

October 19, 2016 at 5:34 pmJust recently finished the Japanese version ( It’s a God tier game seriously enjoy every second of it ) ,
And really an all star seiyuu cast it’s amazing, Jun Fukuyama, Sugita, Aoi Yuki, Sato Rina and Morgana voice : Ikue Ōtani soo freaking awesome.
I really don’t think they could pull off something better in english.
( Considering past performance in Persona games in english…. )
Some people like it, i particularly don’t enjoy them. Japanese honorifics in english dialog make me cringe so hard.
But the point is not here, it’s surely gonna be different , no question about this, and for that i really wish they put dual audio for the western people to enjoy the original version too. Plenty of people will pirate this on PS3 and Undub it. no matter where and how you look at this,Atlus not making the smart choice here. Do provide some work for the English Voice actors but don’t sacrifice the Japanese VA and some sales. Do Both!
Let’s wait and see how they will hadle the translation of the game too

There is a clear majority who participated in the poll who wanted JP voices. Considering that Atlus USA held a poll to gauge interest on dual audio not just once, but twice, and then decide to go dub-only, it is a clear sign that they don’t care about the fans.

October 19, 2016 at 6:13 pmA bad translation (only played VC1 once in English so I don’t know the deets, it seemed competent) is definitely important avoid especially as a console exclusive which has lower odds of mods correcting things but dual audio is still more valuable as it allows people to review the voiced dialogue without a second language version of the game.
Telling someone to click a menu option is a lot easier than to import a game to check something.

October 19, 2016 at 11:26 pmOptions are always a good thing. Dual Audio really would be the best option here. I’ve not been disappointed by Atlus yet (although Yosuke came close, and Rise’s replacement VA did nice as Rei in Q, but sucked as Rise in P4Dan).
The biggest issue I have is that they shouldn’t have had such a HUGE gap between their release and ours. I’ve already been totally spoiled on the main plot and villains (though the villains part was my own choice). It was a very foolish decision, even if I do enjoy the valentines day date/heart stolen implication. And I’ll admit, it does make sense for them to release it before FF15, because I’m sure their sales would’ve have been as good, but yeah, I wish the wait weren’t so long. 4 months away.

October 19, 2016 at 11:43 pmHaving both options is the best outcome imo, that way people can enjoy the game the way they want instead of arguing over it.

October 19, 2016 at 11:44 pmAgreed. I personally prefer to watch foreign movies with subs, but in games I like the audio in English, because with my focus on the action I sometimes miss parts.. I’m always missing stuff when I play DW Empires because it’s Japanese audio only….

October 20, 2016 at 12:53 amLots of hate for dubs, why? Seriously. If you don’t like it, then don’t use it. Most games nowadays come with Japanese audio. I prefer the dubs because I’m reading English on the screen and what they are saying in Japanese comes across as background noise, distracting me from the story instead of enhancing it. Though when they speak the language I read, I find it enjoyable and I can follow along.
So for me, the distraction of what I’m hearing not matching up with what I’m seeing is very frustrating. Plus, if I don’t understand them and there is no subtitles, that’s even worse. Mirage Sessions #FE did this in battle. They say something in Japanese and I don’t have a clue what they are saying.
And by the way: “Learn Japanese.” is not a reasonable response.

October 20, 2016 at 2:36 pmThey actually alter certain honorifics for Persona games (ie, Satonaka
or Satonaka-san becomes just Chie, since contextual keigo is difficult
to get across – someone who doesn’t know you very well but is your
classmate here wouldn’t address you by your last name, but similarly,
people in Japan don’t come up with very witty nicknames because they
have keigo to begin with), but anyways, honorifics are neither good or
bad on their own in a localization, they’re a tool. How they’re used is
what is important.
https://aesirsubs.wordpress.com/articles/all-about-honorifics/
Your problem seems to be the fanbase being cringe, which has nothing to actually do with localization choices.
Uncle Slick
October 20, 2016 at 2:44 pmJunpei has called Chie “Chie-chan”, and there are loads of other examples.
That is were the cringe comes in. It sounds very silly in English, and makes no sense.

October 20, 2016 at 8:36 pmThe problem is Atlus refuses to have dual audio in their games. People have been asking them for years. It only bothers me because they often reuse popular voice actors and characters start to blend together. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case here. I only recognize one person.
Snorlaxation
October 20, 2016 at 10:14 pmDual Audio would fix the issues. It’s easy. People are willing to pay for it. Just do it. Or at the very least, CUT OUT THE HONORIFICS!
Secondly, I don’t mind the voice cast, and I’m glad Yuri Lowenthall is nowhere near this game ( I think). However, Anne’s VA Erika Harlacher is giving me issues. I don’t know if I like her. I’ll have to wait till her english character trailer to decide.
SommenRider
October 22, 2016 at 4:50 amI know there are examples, what I’m saying is there are times where they go the other way on it. (As I mentioned in the prior post, altering Satonaka/Satonaka-san to just Chie, going from Risecchi to Risette, the fact that Kuma became Teddie to begin with, and interestingly enough, Yukaricchi to Yuka-tan.) It’s situational at best, at worst mildly inconsistent.
If it’s silly in English, then go import? You’d be getting dubtitles either way with dual-audio, and Atlus USA isn’t changing what is a valid approach to something that takes place in Japan with Japanese characters. I’ve watched documentaries in English that kept honorifics, and true crime books about yakuza that also kept them. There are incredibly high-caliber translators that insist on using honorifics and incredibly poor ones who don’t use them at all.
My mom speaks in a mix of languages all the time, so I guess I’m used to foreign speech patterns infiltrating the English tongue.
Either way, in English conversation, actual Japanese people do use honorifics with each other, though to a lesser extent. Probably the same extent as in a Persona game. Not sure if they find that it sounds silly, or care if it does to others.
I’m not defending the practice outright, and Atlus has flubbed a few times on what they’ve decided to change and what they’ve retained; once again, honorifics are a tool – it’s what the translation does with them that matters, not the fact that they’re even used at all.
