We’ve learned (from Money-Link via ScreenCritics) that Nintendo’s new code-named NX console might be reverting back to using cartridges.

The news comes via Chinese memory manufacturer Macronix, who is reportedly seeing an increased number of ROM chips being ordered from Nintendo for the new consoles production.

Company chairman Wu Miin actually made very specific references to the NX console in his financial briefing:

Macronix’s ROM chips are usually supplied to videogame console maker, Nintendo. Although the sales is in off season during the first quarter, the revenue is similar compared with the same period last year. Wu Miin suggested that as Nintendo had just announced it will release a new generation console in March next year, and the console will be launched at the same time in Japan, America and Europe, so ROM’s sales is expected to increase in the latter half of this year, and it will have a large growth potential.

Screen Critics also make a note that Macronix recently began putting 32GB chips to test, meaning these could be the ones used in the new console. There are many rumors surrounding Nintendo’s new console, and we’re classifying this as a rumor as well.
