Here’s the First Look at Journey Art Director’s Underwater Exploration Game, Abzu

abzu 06-10-15-17

Abzu, the underwater adventure game revealed at last year’s E3 expo, has finally gotten a proper unveiling this week.

The game is the brainchild of former art director on thatgamecompany’s Journey, Matt Nava. Now, we’ve gotten a full preview via Game Informer.

We’ve compiled the pertinent bits of information in their preview:

  • Players can press a button to assemble and swim with schools of fish… or even ride larger, more solitary animals like this sea turtle – if they trust you.
  • The game contains tens of thousands of fish of all kinds and through different eras, with possibly thousands onscreen at the same time. They have their own routines and exist in the game’s food chain – which the player can have a hand in.
  • Drones can be revived in order to mine mineral pools in the environment… or be eaten by the sharks.
  • As you explore deeper into the game you’ll uncover different environments with their own puzzles.

There’s even a first look at gameplay for the game, via Gamespot:

I remember Aquaria being an amazing 2d underwater metroidvania’ish game.
This one doesn’t really seem metroidvania’ish, but exploration (underwater one especially, I didn’t find much of those) tickles me in all the right places all the same.

Looks very pretty and zen. I really enjoyed Journey and this looks to be in a similar vein.

Nice to get a game from at least part of their team on the PC. Hopefully it will be as good an experience.
