Sonic Still Has a Future on Consoles, says Sonic Head, Takashi Iizuka

In an interview (with 4Gamer) about Sonic Runners, the upcoming F2P Sonic mobile game, the head of the Sonic development team, Takashi Iizuka, stated that gamers needn’t worry about Sega’s new focus on PC and mobile games.

When asked whether Sonic would relocate to mobile devices, Iizuka said, “Currently we don’t … I don’t plan to halt Sonic for home consoles. Don’t worry about that! And enjoy!”

This statement comes amid worries that Sega is abandoning consoles. Although the developer-publisher has decided to refocus their efforts on the PC and mobile markets, they also intend to capitalize on Sonic’s popularity in the West, where the console market is still profitable, so this assurance makes sense.

Man, is there some huge Sonic following that still exists that I’m just not aware of? I feel like if Sega just dropped that hedgehog for a good 5-10 years and focused on all their other IPs instead, not a single tear would be shed.

It’s funny you ask, ’cause in the interview Iizuka states the reason Sonic Runners is F2P is because Sega are trying to reach more people with Sonic. That is to say, his sun has long since imploded, and they’re now trying to get that recognition/marketability back.

I’d love to see some new Streets of Rage or Golden Axe, and actual Golden Axe not whatever the hell that thing a few years back was, games in general. And maybe the stuff they haven’t abandoned completely getting western releases more. Call me crazy, but I think if they actually do that and don’t halfass it it’d pay off for them.

For your own sanity, do not search for sonic on deviantart.

That said, Sonic Generations sold pretty well, as did Sonic Transformed. All they have to do is to make a game that isn’t utter garbage like Sonic Boom (lovely show, though) and Sonic will be profitable. The funny thing is that if they simply rehashed the formula instead of reinventing the wheel every single time, they would succeed a lot more.

Oh god, me too. The fan “remake” of SoR left me greatly desiring for more.

And like you said, NO 3D. Thank god this one never went ahead, for example:

Sonic has a future on consoles only if you know what you’re doing.

    But you don’t, Sega.

Ironically, there’s barely any Sonic porn anymore. It’s all Tails and Cream (……) and Rouge nowadays. Even the porn has moved on from Sonic.

    Sega only cares about Sonic.
Pretty sad if you ask me. :/

I wouldn’t be against 3D at all, it would just need to be handled well.

The problem is the handled well part. I just find it a lot more possible for them to screw this up in 3D than following the tried-and-true old 2D formula with a bit of spice.

If that isn’t a sign that Sonic should die, then I don’t what is.

I always thought SEGA would do something like this. Sonic needs to stick around because he is a great IP but he doesn’t need to be milked like Street Fighter was. Sega needs to keep the blue blur but have less focus on him and more on other IPs that are relevant. A new Sonic game every 2-3 years is good because it gives the team time to focus on things and do the final checks and not rush the game out to stores. Sonic needs to stay a AAA title and not fall flat on sales and quality. Sonic games need to be above 7/10 and hit that great 8/10 or even 9/10 mark. Sega just doesn’t seem to care about the quality but the quantity of copies sold. Quality is more important, the better the quality the more sales that come from it. Sonic games need to be above 7.5/10 to sustain the quality in them. Then the sales can be focused on. If Sonic sells more than 2 Million copies per game then that’s reasonably good for a franchise like Sonic.
