The Game Awards: New Zelda Looking Very Open-World-ish

The Game Awards tonight weren’t full of surprises like they were in the past, but if you were a Zelda fan, that short demo Nintendo gave of its new Wii-U Zelda game almost made up for that fact.

Several features really stuck out, such as the ability to zoom in and out of the world map on the controller’s screen and emphasis on horse-mounted combat … that horse being Epona, of course.

Also shown was a slow-motion mode that activates whenever you attempt to aim the bow after leaping off of Epona, as well as a parachute that can be used to glide through the air. No doubt an attempt to showcase the game’s apparently large overworld.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the demo was the constant referencing to the game world’s size. Seeing Epona gallop through the grassy plains reminded this gamer of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which looks to point towards Zelda going the large, open world route this time around.

It was also revealed the game will be coming sometime in 2015, sometime after the new Star Fox makes its debut.
