Polish developer CD Projekt is seen as a bit of a darling amongst the hardcore crowd after the success of their two Witcher games, but there has been quite a bit of concern as of late for their upcoming Cyberpunk RPG. With the game having firearms, many of the more traditional RPG fans worry that the game will be a hybrid action/shooter, similar to Fallout 3 or Borderlands.
Taking to IGN to do an interview, CD Projekt RED’s Co-Founder Marcin Iwinski reassured nervous fans that no, this game will not be a hybrid.
- People have been asking me if Cyberpunk 2077 will have multiplayer or if it will be a straight-up shooter, and I tell them to relax, because it will be a true RPG game. We are known for storytelling, and big game worlds, and so we’re taking all what we’ve learnt from previous three Witcher games, as well as the open-world aspect, and applying it to Cyberpunk 2077.
Besides extinguishing the fires of rumorville, Iwinski also mentioned that the game will include features fans aren’t expecting:
- So yes, it is an all-out RPG game, but we’re looking at having a lot of new gameplay elements that I cannot talk about yet. One thing I can say for sure is that it is definitely NOT a multiplayer shooter.
As is always the case, no details were given. Regardless, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to sit squarely in the CRPG genre and should please even cranky fans of the genre such as myself.
