In an article written by Sergey Galyonkin (the creator of Steam Spy), he brings to light some very interesting bits of data regarding consumer purchasing habits, specifically how many games certain groups of Steam users buy.
In the article he states that 1% of Steam Users own 33% of all the games purchased on Steam, while 20% own 80%. That leaves a whopping 80% of Steam users that own 20% of all games bought, but why is that?
The comparisons he uses are Valve’s popular DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and compares them to Torchlight 2 and Rocket League. In it he found that the average amount of games that a DOTA 2 player owns is 12, while CS:GO players only doing marginally better with 40.
Compare that to the Rocket League and Torchlight 2 players, and their numbers dwarf them, with Rocket League gamers owning an average of 78 games and Torchlight 2 gamers owning a whopping average of 117 games.
Coming from this, these demographics have radically different spending and playing habits. Your average DOTA 2 player will almost exclusively play the one game, putting thousands of hours into it, while the Torchlight 2 gamer will purchase various games, spreading more time amongst them. You also need to take into account the sheer number of people who play DOTA 2, compared to almost every other game on Steam.
Sergey Galyonkin goes into more detail in his article about these demographics, so if you’re interested in what you’ve learned you can read it over here.
