Internet responds to Luce, the Vatican’s new anime girl mascot

Luce

Luce has taken the internet by storm despite only existing for two days with tons of fanart and memes spreading across social media.

Luce has clearly achieved her goal of reaching global youth, as Catholics and even some nonbelievers resonate with the hopeful message that Luce was intended to spread.

Notably, wholesome artists like Diva who posts the daily webcomic Little Nuns posted their own drawing of Luce guiding a parade of ducks.

There’s also Ironlily, who regularly posts art for their OC Christian order Ordo Mediare.

Of course Japanese artists are also taking note of the anime-inspired mascot, designed by tokidoki co-founder Simone Legno.

Of course the memes write themselves when she literally has the power of “God and Anime” on her side.

Of course not all is well in the world of Luce, people being upset with the Catholic Church is a tale that spans multiple millenia. Many self-avowed “tradcaths” consider Luce to be some sort of demonic dogwhistle for “Lucifer”. While it’s true that both names have Italian for “Light” as their root (Lucifer means “Lightbringer” in Latin), that’s where the similarity ends. Other critics are just upset that Luce is a cute anime girl instead of some imitation of a Renaissance painting.

On the topic of the upcoming Catholic jubilee, the church is also trying to reach out to the youth by canonizing the first “Gamer” Saint. Earlier this year, the Vatican announced plans to canonize Carlo Acutis, a young man who has had several miracles attributed to him after his death. In life, Acutis donated games to children through the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin
