Competitive Mode Revealed for Sonic Mania

Sega has revealed a new competitive mode for Sonic Mania.

Featured above, new gameplay accompanies the entirely new mode, which factors in a few things to determine the victor: clear time, score, number of items acquired, number of rings acquired when clearing the level, and total number of rings acquired.

Here’s a rundown on the new mode, via Sega:

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are all playable characters in Sonic Mania’s Competition Mode. Winners are determined by a few factors: clear time, score, number of items acquired, number of rings acquired when clearing the level, and total number of rings acquired throughout the level. Players can adjust the rules of each match by adjusting items in the item boxes and number of rounds that take place.

The news comes hot on the heels of the game’s special stages, time attack, and bonuses were revealed. You can read more about that here in our previous report.

Sonic Mania is launching across for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch on August 15th.

Why the hell did the squash the sprites like Sonic 2? This is a problem that was already solved in Sonic 3, where they just scaled the sprites down.

    I hope so.

The problem was “solved” in Sonic 3 because the stages were designed specifically for competition mode. This seems like it’s going for the Sonic 2 approach. However, I’m not sure why they didn’t scale the play area down, given the fact that the game’s in 1080p.

This game is more feature complete than most AAA titles out there.

  • OzymandiasAeonis

It natively renders at somewhere around 480p so this makes it difficult on top of displaying two 16:9 screens which never looks right .

  • OzymandiasAeonis

It’s nice that they factor over scores into it otherwise Knuckles and Tails would never be able to compete with Sonic’s dropdash if it was solely time based.
