Ridiculous Crossover Fighter BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle Announced

It seems like crossover fighting games are all the rage once again – Aksys Games has announced BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle at this year’s EVO.

The game includes characters from a multitude of game franchises, including: Ragna the Bloodedge from BlazBlue, Yu from Persona 4 Ultimate Arena, Hyde from UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH, and Ruby Rose from the 3D animated series RWBY.

Featured above, you can view the game’s debut trailer.

The game’s lead character designer, however, is Arc System Works’ illustrator Konomi Higuchi. Here are the first images and such:

Development platforms, pricing, nor a release date outside sometime next year were not confirmed at the time of publication – however we’ll keep you guys posted.

They need something to fill in the gap while they start up the engine for the P5 spin-off train.

  • NuclearCherries

This will be the first thing of actual quality Ruby Rose has appeared in.

Strange that Guilty Gear isn’t there though. Ah well. Hope Lambda-11 gets in.

  • While the game includes all the aforementioned Japanese characters, it’s
actually being developed by Rooster Teeth Productions, an
American-based studio mostly known for the Halo-inspired fan series Red vs. Blue.

I don’t know if this is accurate. Not only is the copyright for the game held by ArcSys, French Bread and Rooster Teeth simultaneously, I’m willing to bet the only involvement RT has is to provide their characters and voices.

  • RichardGristle

Just take all of my money, Arcsys.

  • Mr0303

Makes sense that ArcSys would reuse some of their assets for a game like
this. It seems they are seriously committed to murder MvC:I.

  • RichardGristle

Their upcoming lineup absolutely murders Capcom.

  • Looks like ArcSys intends to create the Marvel Killer Universe with a sequel to DBZF.

  • Baron Krause

Dunno, all of the spin off games were pretty good. Dancing all night was freeking awesome.

  • PaRaLLaXTHeTiCS

    Fuck yeah.

  • Ace

    Wut

  • Uberrich

Looks good. Not gonna lie thou, needs Sol Badguy in here as well. :D

  • Actually this was an oversight on my part. RWBY is what they’re known for (and is in this game). The game definitely looks to be developed by ASW.

  • Matz

Game looks nice, I hope that ArcSys manages to make a good game and it doesn’t end up as some sort of MUGEN

On the other hand, since they’re taking their time to make new assets for RWBY characters it would be nice if they include Persona 5 MC

  • Wickling1

And just like that all my money is gone, im gonna spam rwby unless penny and phyrra are there(PLEASE GIVE ME MY DEAD BABIES)

  • Uncle Ocelot

To be fair, they don’t really need to do much to murder MvC:I, it’s doing a decent enough job at committing seppuku.

  • chaoguy

Great to see people hyped for this- little concerned about RWBY’s inclusion.
The creator had a rough time with Rooster Teeth if “Shane’s Letter”- an expose after he died- is even half true. Not to mention the show has degraded in quality, and Rooster Teeth are hardcore almost SJW lefties (some are expecting anti-Trump elements in the new season based on the writers comments during his election).

I’m sure Ruby will be a fun character to play, I just don’t want western liberals getting more of a foot in the door in Japan. And I especially want them to do right by Monty’s memory.

  • Jettythesunfish

Looks cool, I’ll admit, but kinda meh on this. RWBY inclusion is rather surprising, but I understand it’s somewhat popular in Japan.

  • 2501

All these franchises… and still no BlazBlue Vs Guilty Gear :'(

When am i going to beat carbon copy Sol-badguy with Solbadguy?

  • Nalferd

How is RT turning sjw? You got links m8? If this is true then it is quite alarming.

  • NukeA6

Don’t even know 3/4 of these characters and even I think it’s more interesting than MvCI. Is this RWBY show any good?

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)
  • Uncle Ocelot

There’s still time, you never know.

  • A Practiced Observer

The developer is also a huge fan.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Guilty Gear and Blazeblue finally crossover with Persona along for the ride; sadly it has a bad case of cancer in 1/4 of its body.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

When has anything you can’t avoid seeing people talk about yet you’ve never heard anything about beyond how the characters look ever been good?

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Seppuku would mean they’re trying to regain their respect instead of shooting themselves in the foot to relieve the pressure pushing out all the blood from the last time they shot themselves in the foot.

  • A Practiced Observer

Its pretty good. I have seen a whole range of opinions.

Here is a quick rundown of things to note:

    Its a 3D CG show.

It started with a team about 20 people in the first season and coming on its 5th season it is close to 100 people.

    Season 1:
Animation is kind of mediocre (except for the fight scenes which is very good)
Voice acting is kind of mediocre
    Music is fantastic

    Season 2:
Animation is passable (fight scenes are still very good)
    Voice acting is pretty good
    Music is fantastic

    Season 3:
    Animation is pretty good
    Voice acting is good
    music is fantastic

    Season 4:
The studio changed animation software so while many parts look better, some things look awkward
    Voice acting is good
    music is fantastic.

  • Jettythesunfish

    Ah, that makes sense.

  • A Practiced Observer

If RWBY’s success in Japan means their own CG work will start being done at more than 15 fps, that will have been a major positive impact.

  • A Practiced Observer

In one of their recent episodes of “Camp camp” they made a fag joke. If there was a major SJW element at RT, I don’t think they would have let that happen.

  • KenAyagami

ya need to agree with that, though their milking P4 like a dead cow, their quality in game is still pretty decent

  • Don Tworry

I look forward to killing all the thots from RWBY as Yu.

  • Lea Pastillaroja

got any info on Monty’s death m80?
I heard some rumors about his grlfriend indirectly killing him cus she didn’t want to get rid of her cat (wich he was alergic to) and that she was the one to pull the plug when he got into a coma
never heard anything about him not being in good relation with Rooster Teeth though

  • A Practiced Observer

I read Shane’s letter in its entirety, I think he has a victim complex that made mundane functions of the company seem like a conspiracy against him.

  • deadmancrawling

This is the dumbest thing ever and I want in.
    Ridiculous crossovers feed my soul

  • deadmancrawling

They just announced it, I think they are gonna add guilty gear and, I hope, something totally out of left field, even for this game

  • NukeA6

Well I at least know the BlazBlue characters and heard good stuff about Persona 4 Arena.

  • sanic

Has anyone considered the possibility this might be stupid?

  • Sean Sharpe

“Rooster Teeth are hardcore almost SJW lefties (some are expecting anti-Trump elements in the new season based on the writers comments during his election)”

Thinking Trump is shit doesn’t even mean you’re left-wing, let alone a SJW. There’s a lot of conservatives who dislike him for various reasons… Folks need to stop acting like you either like Trump or you’re a commie. It was fucking stupid bullshit when Hillary’s camp more or less said that if you don’t vote for her you’re a racist misogynist and it’s fucking stupid bullshit when Trump’s groupies act like you’re a SJW if you think he’s garbage.

Folks in Rooster Teeth might be liberals… But SJWs? RWBY is filled with attractive female characters (who until the most recent season were underage) with cleavage and bare midriffs, Death Battle is filled with jokes that SJWs would call “misogynistic”…

  • Sean Sharpe

It’s highly enjoyable. Some pretty great fight scenes, a likable cast of characters, and good world building. Don’t go in expecting something ground-breaking or anything like that, since it really isn’t… But it’s still a lot of fun and sometimes even manages to have some great emotion.

  • Mr_SP

Guilty Gear is going to be rough to add. They have to reanimate everything, after all. Not impossible, they have RWBY after all, but harder than “take assets from these much older games” like the rest.

  • Mr_SP

Like having Mario, Samus, and Link punch each other a lot? Or having Captain America fight Captain Commando?

Sure, it’s really stupid. And profitable.

  • 2501

I’d be fine with them just updating the sprites from Guilty Gear XX#AC, BlazBlue has been using the same sprites for a while now anyway.

  • tccboss

I’m looking forward to this game but RWBY just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

  • DizzyGear

I hope for Neko Arc Chaos as the something totally out of left field.

At least not yet, they still have the old sprites laying around.

A few of the staff have let out some snipes at Trump before (the same all rhetoric that hasn’t stuck) and Austin is a blue dot in a red state.
They certainly disagree with Trump- which is fine- but they don’t always explain why they disagree with him- which is also kinda fine.

The issue is that usually who have those beliefs and use a particular rhetoric (calling everyone -ist or -ism) can’t keep their politics out of their work. The head writer took a quote from one of the episodes (“Doing nothing at all can sometimes be the worst thing to do”) in regards to Trump winning, and one of the VAs demanded no one follow her on Twitter who “offer excuses” for Trump, along with lamenting when he won.

It’s not that it’s guaranteed they’ll try to politicize the show (their other shows have avoided it)- it’s that the most politically vocal staff in their company are working together and people like them typically can’t HELP but push an agenda or make a soap box. And since the show does have people that are prejudiced against and a powerful technologically advanced homogenous nation- the building blocks for that temptation to make things an obvious metaphor for the real world are strewn everywhere.

But- As I said before- Rooster Teeth usually try to keep their mouth shut on political stuff. Hope they continue to do it on their cash-cow. And obviously, none of this is even a thing to worry about in the game.

  • chaoguy

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-H0KuOwKFYwZTJxbXg0SG5CTEE/view
The expose from a fellow member of staff on the show- Shane.

In short, the production of the show took more control away from Monty and would often go against what he wanted (not hiring people who he had worked with and had talent and hiring amateurs, throwing in characters early for shock-value, etc)- he was trying to get the show back under his control. Despite this- it appears he was on good terms with most people there- most of the characters being based off particular people he knew. Maybe RT were trying to wrestle control away from him, maybe they were trying to avoid it being a one-man show and giving young animators a chance to get “industry” skill and only hindering themselves.

His GF was bringing cats home- despite Monty being deathly allergic (he had FB pictures of all the shots he gave himself in the mornings). The claim is he went in to hospital for something routine and had a bad reaction to anesthetic. He would have been brain-damaged even if he did recover. His wife (under the legal rights in Texas) made the call to pull the plug.
This was before his family had chance to arrive- and less than an hour into a charity drive to help raise money for his recovery/his family.
Somehow this money wound up with her, and she seems to have gotten a boob job pretty soon after his death. Considering how RT hated her like poison well before this must sting- even if “Shane’s Letter” made it look like they were using Monty.

Shane was eventually fired/let go (apparently the last of the people who wanted to do things Monty’s way) and asked him to come to the office so they could take files off his personal harddrive (arguably preventing any of the RWBY stuff- RT’s property- from being “stolen” by Shane). Shane then posted his “letter”- still speaking of Monty’s wife in a favorable light. RT responded to Shane’s letter by having their community manager post a pic of her crying on Twitter (or she may have done this of her own accord). They then made a more formal response- claiming Shane was twisting and inventing things (and a few tweets pre-dating the event do hint at Shane being idolizing Montry- RT going as far as to claim Shane was obsessive and wanted to BE Monty and had feelings for his wife).

Monty had a dream and were surrounded by people that loved him, wanted to use him, or were incompetent. The fault for his death definitely falls on the Wife IMO- he looked sickly leading up to his death. Or- maybe he was allergic to anesthetic. We’ll never know.

  • chaoguy

“Turning” is a bit of a strong word. They’re in Austin- a blue area in a red state that tends to be populated with hipsters. And their staff have had snipes and lamentations of Trump being elected (going as far as one of the VAs to demand that people who “make excuses” for Trump shouldn’t follow her and perpetuating the false rape claims).

Now- USUALLY they keep their hands out of politics aside from a few jokes here and there (and mocking the president is part and parcel of being in the US) and a few sketches that bombed (their response to the “outcry of racism” over star-wars was to do a short sketch on a Family Matters styled sitcom . “It ain’t easy being black in a galaxy far, far away.” The video was panned and they quietly removed it). One of the head writers even posted a quote from the show in response to Trump being elected (“Sometimes doing nothing is the worse thing you can do.”)

The concern is since that some of the major people involved in the show have all the tell-tale signs of being SJW that they’ll use RWBY to soap-box or push their message. We’ve seen plenty of people who were left-leaning suddenly lose their mind once Trump was in office.
But- no guarantee. Achievement Hunter is untouched (though they have toned down their language, but that can come with age) and even other productions by the same writer (Camp Camp) don’t do anything like that.

  • chaoguy

Exactly. The office is a mixed bag and it’s hard to read what they’ll do. Their staff believe one thing and only occasionally does it leak into their work.

  • chaoguy

I think it’s half true. RT wanted to stop RWBY being a one-man show but they did it the worst way possible. They tried to bring it in line with what industry animators did and used, and Monty didn’t work like that.
If Shane was always the voice in the room giving Monty a little more pull to keep things his away, it’s not hard to imagine RT grew tired of him.

If anything Shane’s letter exonerates Monty’s wife of all wrong-doing. Yet- RT hated her long before Monty’s death, she got a boob job pretty damn fast after he died, and somehow got the charity drive money intended for Monty’s family.

  • chaoguy

I’d recommend seasons 1 to 3. It was made by the guy who did those “Dead Fantasy” fights (where Final Fantasy girls fought Dead or Alive girls). The shows action and music is fantastic, and the world of the show has incredible potential.
While the other elements started off jank- it got better. Animation for non-fight scenes improved, voice actors/tresses emoted more, and the plot revealed more of it’s mysteries (while annoyingly keeping some stuff that should have been explained earlier out of the show- reserved for short “world of remnant” episodes and stuff mentioned in passing by the creators/writers on Twitter).

However, the show creator & main animator died around the production of Season 3. Season 3 starts to get worse in some of the action scenes as a result.

Season 4 (IMO) absolutely bombed. The plot made NO progression after a sensational ending to Season 3 (and any progress made could have been done a lot faster) and the action is very muted in comparison to previous seasons. The good action helped mask and compensate for any flaws the series had with pacing, plot, and writing. Without it- it was like everyone realized the emperor had no clothes. Pacing is sporadic, characters say one thing about the world around them but show another, and major mysteries and plot points are seemingly forgotten or don’t get a proper resolution. The show is so frustrating from that point on in that its taking steps backwards to what it could have been.

IMO- watch the four trailers that sort of act like an episode 0 (Red, White, Yellow and Black- the last two actually being plot relevant) and watch Season 1 if you like it. Bear in mind Season 2 is a little better, and watch it if you want. Do the same for 3 and watch the Episode 0/Trailer for Season 4 if you must- if only to see how much the action has tanked.

  • chaoguy

I agree with that summery. I would say plot across the board (even for seasons 1-3) is good, but undercut by not building upon mysteries and hints properly.

Season 4 feels sluggish and we still learn nothing about the villains motives- which can be frustrating.

  • chaoguy

Much as I love hand-drawn animation and feel it should not die out, I do hope they improve on their CG side. Even the worst parts of RWBY look better than Berserk for crying out loud.

  • A Practiced Observer

You learn a lot of things about the villains, just not the underlying motives.

  • Volumes 1-3 are all shit, whereas volume 4 is actually good.

  • ProxyDoug

It saddens me to see this specially since they even made a joke out of trigger warnings in an RvB PSA.
In their Let’s Plays, this aspect of them get’s on the nose sometimes and let’s not forget they were the ones that complained that women sould be in Battlefield 1. Oh yeah, their reaction to Jontron’s “debate” with Destiny was very disapointing.

  • NukeA6

I guess I’ll watch them all.

  • ProxyDoug

That’s really fucked up, he inspired a generation, myself included, It’s sad to see how bad things got around him.

  • ProxyDoug

That said, I know Shane and like many animators and artists I know, he is not very self confident and even dependent to an extent, he was going through divorce at the time and has a history with depression, so I think RT probably straight up lied about his obsession, maybe even as a character assassination attempt.

  • Zack Attack

Aksys is the publisher for the Arc System Works games in North America.

  • chaoguy

Right. They’ve had lots of scattered incidents. With other people, they’ve gotten worse. On paper RT should have done something stupid after Trump won and imploded- yet they didn’t.

  • You’ll have to, since it won’t make sense otherwise.

  • Kalafax

Sunday evo? more like bukkake galore from asw.

  • Zero Eternity

RWBY is a weird addition but I like it. Good show with potential to get better or worse, just like everything else. And even if the addition of RWBY turns out bad we still get great characters to pull the game to greatness.

  • Sean Sharpe

I don’t know… Seems like you’re putting the cart before the horse and thinking that everything is all about Trump… I mean, they turn the technologically advanced homogeneous nation into an antagonist faction?

Well, I wouldn’t be shocked. Because it’s already been suggested that because they are so militarized that might be a very real thing. In fact, before the end of Volume 3, I suspected Ironwood was going to be the big bad.

And again… There’s a difference between being upset someone you thought was a horrible person in office and letting that influence your work. Maybe I’m biased as I know a lot of amateur authors, but most writers *aren’t* modern Bioware/Marvel/Frank Miller, no matter what their politics are.

  • FailDRE86

    ArcSys on a roll

  • chaoguy

True. It’s just that we’ve seen so many people spin on a dime with far less red-flags before that it’s hard NOT to expect it y’know?

  • Clone Loli

Gotta say the inclusion of RWBY just feels unnecessary… It’s a very overrated show and has quite a number of flaws, I mean it’s true that the team that worked on it were a smaller team but that never truly certain qualities being poor. Some people say it gets better but if You have to sit through a season or two for a series to get good then it’s honestly very flawed.

For this game I can easily overlook Her inclusion however, I don’t think She’s a bad character, just that the series She’s from is kind of bad and overrated.
