Nidhogg 2 Launches August 15

Indie studio Messhof has announced the release date for Nidhogg 2.

The upcoming melee-focused action game will launch on August 15th for both PC, Mac, and PlayStation 4. Pre-orders are kicking off on July 18th.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, the developers explained why they went with an entirely new art style over the original game’s minimalist style, saying they felt a bit limited with the super limited pixel style the original characters had.

“It seemed silly to use all this potential on pixelated stick figures. So, instead of minimalism, why not try out some maximalism? Animated faces, sweet outfits and hairstyles, bustling environments – the doors had swung wide and Nidhogg 2’s visual style was born,” the developers said in the update.

They should have stuck with the minimalist style for the characters. The new ones look like trash.

Not necessarily minimalist, just a different design. The wacky cartoon look is the antithesis of what I imagined the Nidhogg characters to be in the first game. For some reason I always pictured them as “comically serious” regular looking dudes, like they’re surrounded by insanity but their eternal duel is serious fucking business to them.

Always sad to see when more effort returns a worse result.

But the old one looked like trash.

I think they could have found a balance between a more detailed style and something that doesn’t look offensively horrible. I personally don’t think the original artstyle was anything special but it looks leagues nicer when compared to their “new and improved” one.

Completely unnecessary sequel. A shame because this guy can make some really solid games.
