IGDA Executive Director Kate Edwards Resigns

Kate Edwards, the executive director for the International Game Developers Association, has resigned from her position.

The news comes via GamesBeat, where the IGDA boss confirmed her departure from the organization. Edwards noted that her leaving of the IGDA was amicable.

“I felt it’s time for me to move on. When I first took the IGDA role, I told the board that this is likely a three- to five-year mission for me, and here I am nearly at five years,” Edwards said.

“My top goals were to reinvigorate the IGDA’s relevance, reinstate the IGDA’s core mission as an advocacy org and voice for game developers (not companies), and to emphasize the ‘I’ part of the IGDA and strengthen our international presence.” She added:

“I feel I’ve accomplished all of those things, while enduring a lot of challenges (including weathering GamerGate), and now it’s time for someone with a different skill set to carry the IGDA forward.” Edwards prominently came into the GamerGate debate defending Zoe Quinn, and speaking out on issues of sexism and harassment.

The IGDA at one point was promoting an illicit blocking tool on their official website. The tool, created by a professional victim, was dubbed the “GGAutoBlocker.” Listed as a resource under the “Mental Wellness and Self-Care” section on the Online Harassment Resource page, the tool was later removed due to it raising ethical concerns – most notably the IGDA Puerto Rico chairman Roberto Rosario getting ironically blocked by the tool.

“Read the disclaimer: *not* the IGDA’s tool or list. But like people, tools are imperfect; we’ve removed it for now,” Edwards said when attention was brought to the use of the blocking tool.

Trent Oster, chair of the board of directors and CEO of Beamdog, is stepping up to serve as interim executive director while the IGDA looks for Edwards’ replacement.

In an increasingly politicized gaming industry, many developers hoped the International Game Developers Association would remain neutral by not following the groupthink commonly found in the industry, focusing on helping developers and not promote politics. Perhaps that will change with some new leadership.

  • Mr0303

    “her” – yeah, sure.

IDGA as a whole is cancer.

  • Not to shill my tweets, but a little while back, I found a bucket-load of articles and posts written by Edwards and ended up posting all of it. Feel free to investigate in your own time, as I’ll be making a video on her in the future.

    https://twitter.com/Ebicentre/status/876862400472985601

  • Unfortunately, the effect she has had on the industry is going to take a while to recover from (re: culturalization).

  • Audie Bakerson

    >she

  • It’s not going to recover, because they’re obviously going to replace her with another SJW/feminist to push the same crap.

  • edge

I suspect this is the case. Even if the world’s burning they’ll refuse to accept responsibility for their polarizing of the industry and authoritarian views.

  • MusouTensei

Just disband IGDA all together, no gamer wants that shit.

  • totenglocke

So they’re replacing one pro-censorship SJW with another pro-censorship SJW. Fuck the IGDA.

She’s called a her despite having manlier hands than me. This is why all leftists should be hanged.

  • Not any time soon, no.

But on the other hand, these people will have to die of natural age like the rest of us. Instill pro-freedom values into the next generations, we can reverse this.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

Will probably be replaced with someone equally as awful.

I’m sure I’m going to open up a whole can of worms here, but as a “leftist” I would like to know why I should be hanged because someone used a certain pronoun to describe someone who has manlier hands that some random person on the internet. Seems kind of unfair, no?

  • Travis Touchdown

    Weathering Gamergate?

I’m not sure what reality these people are living in, but I’m pretty sure Gamergate won. These people are a joke now, and it’s starting to leak into the public.

  • Snorlaxation

Right? What the hell kind of comment is that?

  • Ithaca TrenchGun

I say leftists because leftism (bolshevism/cultural marxism) is the root cause of all of what people call “PC” and “SJW”, including man-hands in the article calling himseld a woman.

Forming a clique association certainly detracts from the whole ‘indepedent’ concept.

  • Alistair

Yeah she was as it was mention the other week it because of cunts like these is the the true reason games are censored.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bqvkbDqtRY8

She and them gets zero fucking sympathy from me.

You fucked our games you get stuffed.

  • Alistair

TBH if I was a dev I would not sign up with IGDA, so the question is this does Devs really want to join in a SJWs regression club is xseed, IFI, AND MARVELOUS Part of IGDA?

I think not or hope not for their sake.

  • Alistair

It not always I agree with you, but you are right gamergate won.

As you said they now the jokers.

I didn’t truly think gamergate won for hunk hogan Vs gawker and they are just as bad.

But gamergate played a part though.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

The term “indie” has lost its meaning the last decade with big publishers making agreements beforehead with “indie” developers to publish their games. Also asking money from fans to make a game doesn’t makes it “independent” at all.

  • I think the majority of Western developers will join the IGDA to virtue-signal, for PR points and to prevent themselves from being labeled as misogynists.

  • Alistair

I don’t see xseed and IFI going to because Their will lose face if they sign up or already a part of them.

As considered they do ecchi games and the CEO are not into them.

  • So they replaced a SJW bitch with a SJW cuck.

  • scemar

if you even still think the industry can recover without society as a whole recovering first, I got bad news for ya

why does her being trans matter? Unless you’re just as ideologically possessed as she is

  • luggage lad

you wanna hang people cause you got little cuck hands?

  • luggage lad

gamergate won in that it’s still around in the form of the views it put out in the open and the community of people who shun the pc rhetoric. It brought that community out of fringey sites into the open and grew crazy fast.

  • VersVlees

Oh great its that wanker from Beamdog. (that shitty company that infected the Baldurs Gate name with SJW AIDS)
In short, douchebag gets replaced with turd sandwich.

  • Mr0303

The comment section here is pretty alarming. It’s like a good chunk of the posters here are trying to prove the Gamergate stereotype that we all hate women and minorities.

We all know there’s multiple sides to Gamergate and it’s frustrating seeing the legitimate issues raised by one side get lumped in with the harassment which leads to dismissal of all the rational discussion. It’s a damned shame, especially since issues can’t even be raised without accusations of Gamergate involvement sparking up to silence you..

Just disagree with her and the IDGA’s policies and drop the personal attacks.

I very much disagree with the culturalization stance of the IDGA has adopted, at least from what I’ve heard about it. I think the issue needs some public debate because, if I recall, their main example is Resident Evil 5, which caused a stir due to perceived racism. It’s also Capcoms highest selling game, I believe. Does the incorrect assumption of racism negate the success?

Would the IDGA have recommended Capcom censor or change their game which we know wasn’t actually harmed by it’s African location if it was made now? These are the questions I’d like to see some answers for because the implication is a massively successful game could have been altered to avoid outrage that didn’t actually affect anything.

I stopped buying Western games years ago because of how utterly infested they are with social justice, and there’s no indication that that’s going to change in the foreseeable future. Gamergate didn’t win anything.

I Think the thing with Capcom though is they have tons of content that easily offend feminist and the likes (Rmika butt thong the massive boobies in Capcom games, that they’ve never changed ) so I find it hard to believe cap-com became racially conscious alll of sudden , There plenty of stereotypical character in street fighter Balrog etc Deejay , They didn’t come out and make a statement there sorry for offending people . The thing with resident evil and Japanese storytelling is Rarely is Japanese story telling realistic when it comes to there Entertainment they usually seek the opposite, There Rare title that try to be realistic but it rare , , it escapist entertainment far away worlds that are clearly fantasy for Japanese player to enjoy . American entertainment strive for that sense of hyper-realistic immersion by sticking anything in the story that makes it feel more “Present and Real ” ” and literal ” Japan sorta the opposite . Soo, . Resident evil 5 is a fantasy horror soap opera with Super Spies and some boobs , , And I am guessing the game really didn’t depend on “Africa ” For anything really it didn’t need the culture the history or the details , I don’t even think it took place in a real “Africa or any place in africa ” , it was just a random place for zombie that happen to be inspired by Africa. , The same way the other resident evil set in Spain was a random ahistorical place . So I think Capcom simply thought well it not that important to the game so they alter it to make the game easier to sale in the USA they added random zombies or other races , since they simply didn’t care , It was never that important to begin lol

. Resident evil 5 wasn’t about Africa it just some random place where zombie happen to be ,set in the modern world . It got as much in common with Africa as the anime magi has in common with the middle east

  • buddyluv324

Honestly, the opposition is going to find something to use as ammo, weather its childish name calling or otherwise if they can find a way to spin it.

    >Genuine Equality

As if they will let that happen. They will lose their advantage if real equality happens.

  • Nalferd

I hope they just all die for f**** sake.

  • Nalferd

I hope that trend continues but remember some Japanese devs already self censor their work even in a Japan only release. Still some devs don’t care about this shit so yeah just stay positive.

  • Nalferd

Weathering my ass. Someone is still being delusional huh lol.

  • CatCouch

I don’t believe any one place or person is going to have much effect but the accumulation of it might. The constant push from all sides of the press, social media and places like the IDGA and Feminist Frequency could result in a “death by a thousand paper cuts” scenario.

On the Africa point, how can you say it didn’t matter? Does the same apply to busty women in games? Should we just edit them out saying they didn’t really matter anyway? What if I really like boobs? What if I really liked the African locale for RE5?

Why is the response always “lol, who cares”? The developers better care, it’s their games. RE5 sold just fine in the USA so what justifies alerting it? Changing the whole location of the game is not a small alteration, either.

Unfortunately, Capcom has gotten flak for the content in it’s games for a while now and a few times they have changed their games. ESPN had a problem with R. Mika, even after they changed her butt slap. IIRC Capcom also removed the nipple bumps in a patch from Cammy.

I look at MVC:I now and see a significantly lower amount of women in it. Why is that? Are characters like Felicia gone now due to it being a “problem” for the west? She was just fine for the last two decades.

The IDGA seems to be advocating not just for localization changes but
for Japan to self-censor the games themselves. Never make a game with a
white guy set in Africa to begin with. I really hope it’s not that
strong of a push, but considering games like Tokyo Mirage Sessions and
Fire Emblem Fates, I think there’s some cause for concern.

  • CatCouch

That’s most definitely true. We see this kind of double standard everywhere now. The Anita Vidcon incident is a good example. Bullying bully’s is an acceptable response now.

I’m waiting for people to grow tired of the press and social media whipping everyone into a frenzy of the smallest things. Outrage culture is so mentally draining I’d thought we’d have rejected it by now.

  • luggage lad

you’re not very self aware if you don’t see how saying “people who disagree with me should be hanged” is not your own little homegrown cultural marxism.

  • luggage lad

so this is one of those negros, right?

  • Also don’t forget, most Japanese developers have said before that they are interested in gaining the Western market.

In terms of censorship, that’s definitely a cause for concern as well.

  • CatCouch

Yeah, I can see that. There’s a lot of people in the west who are interested in Japanese art, they should remember that before throwing their art out to replicate western art. I want both sides art styles.

There seems to be right and wrong ways to go about gaining a larger audience and it feels like we’re consistently taking the wrong path.

More content? Sounds good. I want more romance options in games. I want more clothing options and more female options. Let me have the choice to dress R. Mika up all sexy and let me have the choice to have more conservative clothes too.

Just removing and shaming elements of games will not gain anyone a bigger audience. The amount of backlash and fighting over games these last couple of years shows that gamers will not be push overs. As an artist myself, I am concerned about this and won’t be pushed around on it.

  • Mr0303

    Yep. It’s a dude.

  • tccboss

has no style, she has no grace.

  • I genuinely didn’t know this. I just thought it was an ugly woman.

  • BuzzardZ

In before an even worse sjw gets the seat.

  • Brandon Shorter

Well I say Africa d doesn’t matter because Japanese stories almost never really give a shit about history time , research or place they culturally don’t really care that much about realism it all anime nonsense usually to create a fun world or a dramatic concept ,. with rare very rare exception of things like metal gear solid ,but doubt metal gear lives up to US video game standard of realism ..but that got more to do with Hideo than japan and it still very much japanese flavored with b movish plot super spy and what not , . Most popular games in japan are outright fantasy though because that what the population prefers in it movies it animation and it’s game , they care about creating Entertaining world . (Live-action Realism is a very American obbession it always pop up In Ever comment story on fantasy art or why cartoon “SUX” or ,Some crazy puritan /sjws bitching about it not being realist .or someone in the comment section asking stupid question why mario isn’t realistic ) .

I don’t think people don’t care it just when “mention japan people have a tendency to imagine SJWS as this magical force that will convince a completely self contained Xenophobic market that doesn’t speak english who doesn’t even have developer who talk to the IDGA or gama sutra to to radically alter it art for a Completely different society culture taste and art , and it Bloody stupid lol. . And it just seem like complete nonsense lol… SJWs are real threat to USA game and censorship sincei t largely americans and western fighting over american games but the amount of influence they have in japan is completely overblown and minscule I’ve been to IDGA and Gama sutra I’ve never seen one Japanese commentor lol.. so an organization that has zero japanese language reach ? Zero japanese language translation and zero japanese how can they gain power in japan magic ? n , it just not a logical premise .

. Like Japan care very little about what offends us I’ll put it bluntly lol.. they care about money and they will make localization changes just to get an Extra few bucks or avoid lose of sales . They will not completely alter a game and spend tons of money doing so just to stop Americans from being offended . ,

Strong push won’t do shit , If the game is offensive to American they just won’t release it here . How the fuck is are they going to tell another country what to do with there own entertainment with zero support of the japanese speaking population ?

Nintendo has had a long history of not releasing game in the USA or watering down localization to avoid hurting sales in Western terrority . But Nintedo of japan does not alter japanese game made for japanese audiences because some idiotic SJWS complained . Japan will kindly tell them to go fuck themself poltely .

  • CatCouch

I’m not so sure that would be the case now. If RE5 was handled the way Nintendo appears to handle localization/culturalization the African locale of RE5 might not have passed the drawing board phase.

If I recall, that culturalization video going around states that Nintendo’s treehouse travels to Japan to talk to developers every two months. I’m not sure on the specifics, though. it might have been mentioned in the Kotaku article on the subject as well.

I just hope Capcom doesn’t care about these issues but MVC:I and SFV
make me question it. Both are subject to western influence by
Marvel/Disney and E-Sports, respectively. One’s had some censorship and
the other is missing any content that could of been censored. Not
    looking good to me.

I’m sure relatively inoffensive games like Mario and Pokemon will be fine but Fire Emblem worries me. It seems plausible that edited out content, like the head patting mode, will be discouraged as they seem to be going for world wide simultaneous releases now. What I’m afraid of is ideas I want in games being left on the cutting room floor due to culture differences and a need to appeal to a larger market.

  • Brandon Shorter

Eh that not likely they will stop making game just because we don’t like it .with Japan they won’t stop making a game just because it doesn’t appeal to are sensibility , Like they have there own design cultural team school of teaching Japan is a completely closed systems (That would be most anime in general , cutesy girl stylized art Huge TIts , ) and they haven’t stopped making this in general . The Japanese industry scaled down there game to match the budgets of local Japanese operation . You won’t get any Anime game with the budgets of the witchers , but they’ll make anime game for there own audience . The mentality in japan is very different “Japanese games for Japanese people- first ” Then foreigner- second . It more than just money it difficult for someone in japan to even understand cultural differences of Americans lol.. What will happen is they simply won’t release the game in the West or an international asian release for asian audience with English subtitles . Japan also has markets in China korea and South-east asia there not dependant on the north american market honestly . Most americans don’t buy game like fire emblem anyway lol mostly anime fans who buy these games

  • Brandon Shorter

Well intrest doesn’t mean it will happen lol pretty sure someone in bollywood said that A Japanese artist isn’t interchangable with a Western artist frankly . I mean it sound nice and all but there massive cultural social differences expectation in entertainment storytelling “Art Style ” and American are increasingly becoming even more Xenophobic when it comes to how much werid /culturally different art will accept . So most Japanese developer have failed and including square , Square just paid a bunch of North americans to make lara croft for them rather than bother with trying to understad cultural differences

  • CatCouch

I really hope that’s the case. I’ve imported a number of games with English subtitles from Asia. I guess we’ll get some answers with how Nintendo will deal with this when Xenoblade Chronicles 2 releases as it’s the game this whole culturalization discussion became public about.

I just hope places like the IDGA don’t pressure developers to rethink they’re art due to another cultures sensitivities. The Megaton atomic bomb in Fallout 3 being censored in Japan is a decent example. Would the IDGA recommend not including the Atomic bomb at all because of WW2? Even if Japanese developers reject the notion of culturalization, it doesn’t mean western developers will. It’s certainly thought provoking stuff.

I just hope this doesn’t lead to more games not releasing in the west like DOAX 3. I’d hate for something like Fire Emblem to lose it’s western audience and drop in scale to only meet Japanese demand.

Looking up sales data on FE Fates on wikipedia, it seems it sold way more overseas than in Japan, so I don’t think it’s accurate to say Americans don’t buy FE games. 1.1 million overseas sales and 500,00 Japanese sales.

  • Brandon Shorter

Well don’t get me wrong there are Huge fans of anime game outside of japan .. for FE for example .The thing there fans of the game because there Anime and Japanese flavor . No one want EA SJWarrior edition of bayonetta that would suck balls . Like no one wanted an American version of dragon ball -____- yeah talking about that awful crappy movie . We want the real bayonetta we want the real chun li in japanese styles and design that came out of japan . ( American ideas eh the problem with are design logic we tend to be Obbessed with realism and will ruin entire fantasy world just to insert are political and present day problems , that just a US cultural issue , it why we have difficulity recreating japanese games ) .
. There are huge fans of Japanese game outside of japan , there fans of it because there Japanese titles they have fantasy werid graphic big tits . Colorful character . It like i love Chinese food lol.. I don’t want them serving me fucking McDonald I want the real authentic thing . . ……… Well Western developers are fucked lol… unfortunately . you’ve still got asia for colorful fantasy worlds and characters LOL

Honestly we basically lack the social infrastructure to sustain the kinda games and animation comic made in japan . When japanese designers think of a design there thinking about how do I best serve the primary demographic (Japanese ) and the style the art etc . it consider a personal thing .

Anything made in america is a political act lol. that making a statement and heavily biased toward some for Western art realism , if it isn’t complete cartoony nonsense.

Didn’t the IGDA Puerto Rico got dissolved shortly after Roberto criticized the use of the block bot?
