Sony Ends PlayStation 3 Production in Japan

We previously reported on Sony reportedly looking to end the production of PlayStation 3 consoles in Japan. Now, we’ve learned the company has finally put the cell-processor driven console to rest.

The news comes via the official Japanese PlayStation website, which now lists the only remaining PlayStation 3 model (the standard 500GB SKU) as having its shipments as “ended.”

Sony originally launched the PlayStation 3 back in November of 2006. Since then, the console went on to sell over 86 million units worldwide.

  • finally.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Sony weren’t joking about that 10 year plan. RIP, you had no gaems at first, but eventually became a good console.

  • Ikagura

Can we consider it as a retro console now?

  • uh oh, guess i better pick one up before scalpers start jacking up prices

  • Uncle Ocelot

PS2’s are still dirt cheap, should be fine for now.

  • catazxy

    Goodnight, sweet prince…

  • Joe

To be fair, selling PS3s at this point isn’t scalping. It’s selling a collector’s item for its market value. People had literally 10 years to get one of these at retail price.

  • Ikagura

Especially since you cannot play Demon Souls and MGS4 with any other consoles

  • A moment of silence for the PS3. You started on a low note, but ended on a high one.

  • Mr0303

Great machine with an awesome library. The PS4 has much to live up to.

  • I had such a a great time playing the Playstation 3. Lots of hidden gems, Free online, Powerful system with many features, familiar controller, region free. It’s a great machine to still have even in 2017.

And with a modded PS3, it’s even more amazing. You can practically play every PS1 and PS2 game on it once you do.

I’m gonna buy a 2nd PS3 to keep in the closest for future preservation.

  • The PS4 is gaining a library that is just as good as the PS3 if not better.

  • Mr0303

Not in my eyes. There was more variety on the PS3, but given time PS4 can catch up.

  • totenglocke

I also bought a backup PS3 just in case mine dies. Nintendo systems have backwards compatibility and emulation if they die, same with PS1 and PS2. PS3 on the other hand doesn’t have the option of emulation.

  • s_fnx

And that’s why emulation is a good thing.

  • artemisthemp

Hopefully my PS3 won’t break anytime soon.

  • Malcolm_Ecks

Its getting there. The best PS games always come in the mid-late period of its life span. Shadow of the Colossus came out a year before the PS3. Same with Yakuza. And Dark Souls came 2 years before the PS4. We’re 4 years in to the PS4 so far and with how long console generations (not counting Nintendo) typically go, the next 2 years are probably going to be strong for the PS4. And I say that as a PC dude.

I always get a PS console because it carries the niche games that Nintendo would keep in Japan.

  • Fenrir007

PS3, you will be missed. From NoGaems to AllGaems, you were truly the best companion a weeaboo could ask for.

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)

10 years of greatness coming to an end
and i intend on keeping mine to continue those years

  • Fandangle

    Really? Where?

  • sanic

I remember being on /v/ and everyone would rip on the ps3 way back when, and they did it creatively, spongebob, pawnstars, watchmen, king of the hill all used to rip on the old ps3.

  • Travis Touchdown

Delusional. PS3 was a disaster from start to finish.

  • Travis Touchdown

    Because no one wants them.

  • Travis Touchdown

Bye bye, you piece of shit. No one will miss you.

  • NukeA6

I remember hating on the PS3 because of the high price tag and lack of games. Now I miss its glory days. Hated the YLOD though.

  • Pilebunker

And it’s still getting games. The newest Under Night In Birth also has a PS3 version. I’m going to keep mine for a good while. I remember this thing being a joke and the 360 and Wii running rampant with fresh games. Then the 360 slowly got less and less games while the PS3 gained a ton of niche games along with the Wii. This also marks that end of the last console generation with “free” online play.

  • sdrawkcab gnitirw

Of course no one wants them, everyone has one already.
It is, after all, the best selling console of all time :^)

  • sdrawkcab gnitirw

Its only retro when Chief Arino plays one

  • Zanard Bell

    Didn’t die like a bitch, PS3. Good.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing
  • RichardGristle

    From zero to hero.

  • DwightParkman

good riddence. worst playstation yet, and it seems PS4 isnt much better so far. but then again, its not even fair because ps1 and ps2 were so damn good.

  • Arenegeth

The most fascinating thing about the PS3 for me, was how it started and how it ended up, both in sales and in my eyes.

From an over expensive (get a second job) machine with hardly any games and a difficulty to develop games for, desperately trying to play catch up with both the Wii and 360.

To a machine with probably the best core game library of the generation that even managed to surpass the sales of the 360 by the time both consoles reached their twilight years.

It also became my console of choice for that generation after I got disillusioned with the 360, and though it can’t hold a candle to its older brothers, I think it had a good run.

  • DizzyGear

The only ones that jacked up in price are the hackable slim models that you can install CFW on and the phat ones with native PS2 compatibility.
The rest will remain low priced because of the amount of them out there.

  • DizzyGear

Hell i bought 2. Because that slim model is seriously still one of the best looking consoles ever made.

  • DizzyGear

    Are you talking about yourself?

  • Ikagura

Well you still have to get a stable emulator and a powerfull enough PC

  • Uncle Ocelot

    >No one wants PS2s

  • Uncle Ocelot

    So small, too.

  • Uncle Ocelot

RCPS3 still has some way to go before it becomes a viable option, but it is getting there.

  • Uncle Ocelot

This isn’t the Wii U’s discontinuation article.

  • DrearierSpider

Had some great exclusives, but what an awful console to play multi platform games on.

  • sdrawkcab gnitirw
  • sdrawkcab gnitirw

The quality of a Sony console is directly proportional to the number of Brave Fencer Musashi games released on it.

  • NOBODY and I mean NOBODY misses neither the piece of shit called the Wii or Wii U. They are dust in the wind in the gaming world. People will still have fond memories of the PS3 10 years from now just like the PS1 and PS2. People will still talk about the amazing games it had for it both multiplat and exclusive.

The Wii and Wii U are the real pieces of shit. Such garbage. People still have fond memories of the NES,SNES,N64,and GC as they are good Nintendo consoles. The rest after is irrelevant.

  • >Still sold 86 million consoles
    >Still has free online
    >Region free
    >Still obtained a shitload of exclusives
    >Still obtained a huge game library in general
    >Still outsold the Xbox 360
    >Came out a year later

  • The weeb games kept releasing so fast I couldn’t keep up.

  • Tubsiwub

I love the console. Not $599 love, but it’s fantastic for what it is.

  • Travis Touchdown

WIi U was not a bad console though. It actually has games.

Fun fact: Wii U did NOT lose Nintendo money at all, which, compared to the PS3, which wiped out ALL the money made on PS1 and PS2, is amazing.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    “It actually has games.”
Oh wonderful, about a dozen decent exclusives. The PS3 still has more.

  • Travis Touchdown

The PS3 doesn’t have anything of value.

  • larverto365

    I actually don’t have a PS3…

  • Uncle Ocelot

Oh, Cody… I’ll just let you be you.

  • BaronKrause

No no, it was a bad console. It’s just that it had a decent set of exclusive games tied to it so you were forced to use it to play them.

  • Travis Touchdown

As opposed to PS3 and PS4, which had nothing at all? Lol.

  • Matz

I love the PS3 in a strange way, how it started as the worst console of the last generation and became the best option at the end outliving its competition including the Wii U and how it’s logo was made using the same font of Spiderman 3 and then they changed it for the PS3 logo we know

  • InkBrush

Cute seeing you’re still trying to blow off both Miyamoto and Reggie. Even though the Wii was when Nintendo became a former shell of itself. KYS

  • BaronKrause

You sound like you’re confusing good games with a good piece of hardware. Wii U had some great games that much to everyone’s dismay had to be played on shit hardware.

  • Fenrir007

Oh yeah, there were some great memes about it.

  • Travis Touchdown

No, no, Wii U’s hardware was great.

Unlike PS4 and Xbox One, it requires no major patches for most releases, for example.

  • BaronKrause

An abacus doesn’t need patches to function either, doesn’t make it better then a calculator.

  • orbo

Good thing me and my brother got a new one last year, definitely worth the $220 or so price tag.
The system has quite the legacy… even if the first five years of that legacy is memes and talladega nights jokes.

BTW did you know any model of ps3 can run ps1 discs?
Ordered a few ps1 games that aren’t on the psn, gonna have a good time.

  • sanic

Oh god wii60 I remember that.

  • Yes ALL PS3 models can run PS1 games. Not every region though PS1 games are still region locked.

  • sdrawkcab gnitirw

    I meant a ps2

  • TGR

It lasted longer than the Wii U…

  • larverto365

Oooooh. Even I used to have one of those, I got it as a gift from my cousin.

  • Travis Touchdown

It also lost way more money. :)

It wiped out all the profit they made on PS1 and PS2.

  • Good riddance as that cell processor was not good.
