PS4 Shipments and Digital Sales for NieR: Automata Top 500,000 Units in Japan and Asia

Square Enix has announced the PlayStation 4 version of NieR: Automata has surpassed 500,000 shipments and digital sales in both Japan and Asia.

The game was recently noted to sell over 300,000 physical copies within Japan on PlayStation 4. The PC version of the game isn’t available in Japan or Asia, unfortunately.

Square Enix also recently announced that both worldwide shipments and digital sales for NieR: Automata broke one million copies, including the game’s western PC version.

In case you missed it, you can find our thorough written and video review for NieR: Automata here (we highly recommend it!).

Those are pretty awesome sales for a niche game like that. This just proves the power of the booty:

That and Platinum Games working with a Square Enix budget. Its as if all the people who didn’t buy Bayo 2 on the Wii U waited for this game.

  • Mr0303

To be honest I don’t think Square spent too much money on the game. Also judging by the demo the game is very different from Bayonetta, but I suppose the perception of getting a game from Platinum may have helped.

  • So that means we have 500,000+ Japanese/Asian sales in addition to the 1 million+ worldwide? Christ, that’s good!

Well I’m actually hoping a Nier remaster does not come out. Do a Drakengard 4 instead, with Platinum again. I’m sure Platinum could execute a musou murder simulator just fine because of the shit they pulled off in Automata.

Nothing against Nier but it would probably sell like shit because it’s just a “yoko” game (which is the problem). I loved Drakengard 1 but its gameplay was shit.

  • gwadahunter2222

Yoko Taro wanted to make a new game at the same time Square Enix wanted Platinum games developed a game for them, and someone had the brilliant idea to combine them. God bless this person

  • Malcolm_Ecks

I meant not to compare Neir and Bayonetta, but rather to say that Platinum games since arguably since Metar Gear Revengeance, Platinum has made mot much except for Wii U exclusives that didn’t sell well and brand games like Legend of Korra and Transformers. Haven’t had a true Plat game since 2013. They’ve built up a legacy since then. Neir Automata looks to outdo the ~2mill that Bayonetta 1 sold.

In terns of the budget, you are right. Though I do think Square gave what a few of the previous publishers didn’t gave Platinum.

    Time.

Time to make a good game instead of a rushed game.

  • Mr0303

In terms of PR this game definitely breaks the succession of bad/mediocre Platinum games released in recent memory.

“Neir Automata looks to outdo the ~2mill that Bayonetta 1 sold.” – that still remains to be seen. There is some positive buzz around it, but Bayo was on more platforms.

I can’t speak to the quality of the game since I haven’t played it, but Square decided to move it from November 2016 to March 2017 so that it avoids FFXV. It could’ve been a lucky coincidence rather than a good move from Square.

  • Verus

wasn’t drakengard 4 almost done or something? instead of a nier remaster, i’d rather have drakengard 1-3 on a disc.

truly the unsung hero of this generation

  • Loli de 42 Anos

Personally, I’d like to see a Drakengard 1 Remake, a Remaster of the first Nier isn’t all that hard to make and it would sell well just because of the following Automata gathered.

Drakengard 1 didn’t age well and a remake from the ground up would be amazing.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

    >Would rather have Drakengard 1-3 on a disc

Terrible idea, and DR2 is awful.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

You would rather they release an existing game, updated, instead of a brand new game? Why the fuck?

  • Malcolm_Ecks

I’m just guessing that Neir will sell more than Bayonetta, but allow me to make my case. The game has been out for a couple of months now and has amassed over 1 million in digital sales and shipments worldwide as reported a couple weeks ago. I think its fair to say that between now and the holiday season it can gain another million. SteamSpy shows just shy of 250,000 owners.

To your point on how Bayonetta was on more platforms, it was only on the PS3 and X360 at initial release. Neir is also on 2 platforms. PC and PS4. I think we’ll see come sales on Steam and the PSN Digital Store in the coming months for Nier:Automata. Especially since the profit margins of digital are lucrative, allowing for more flexibility for sales.

Now, the question is, do we count Bayo1 being packaged with Bayo 2 sales for Bayo1? If yes then technically Bayo 1’s sales sit at roughly 3 million. If not, its roughly 2 million and that counts its recent release on Steam. Nier has time and because its on more platform digitally than Bayo 1 is, I think its a safe guess to say Nier:Automata nets 2 million in sales by this time next year for sure.

I had forgotten about Nier’s initial release date, so that factor’s in its success greatly. They did what EA should have done for Titanfall 2. Instead of putting that game out within weeks of BF1,

  • Mr0303

Physical copies still mean a lot for consoles and since Nier is not on the XBone it is somewhat limited. Plus now that Bayo is also on PC it is definitely available on more platforms. Most of the sales of a game are near (heh) the launch window, so unless the game has some really long legs I kind of doubt it’ll be able to double them.

You are right that they can increase that number with digital sales and make a push.

I don’t think it’s necessary to include the Wii U sales since the main game sold there was Bayo 2.

    I guess we’ll see, but I don’t think it’ll happen.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Even then it’s still likely their biggest budget game (that wasn’t cancelled).

  • Uncle Ocelot

I don’t see why they couldn’t do both. It doesn’t need to be a significant remaster, just a 1080p/60fps port would suffice.

  • Nah a remaster of Nier and Drakengard 3 for PC and PS4 will be easier and cheaper.

  • Mr0303

I don’t know about that. Bayonetta 2 was funded by Nintendo and it looked to be of a higher production quality. I doubt that Square would invest more in a sequel to Nier, which wasn’t very popular to begin with, than Nintendo would for an exclusive that they heavily pushed in terms of marketing (the Playboy collab, Bayonetta in Smash and Amiiibo etc.).

  • EinMugenTenshin

Remember that the measurement of success isn’t sales numbers, but profitability. They’ll probably have no rush in lowering the prices until the initial burst of sales cools off, which seems to be elapsing over a greater period than normal in this case for some reason.

If we’re speaking just pure sales numbers, then those numbers tend to skyrocket for these types of single player experiences during sales/permanent price reductions. Just like Bayonetta or Tomb Raider sold over a million when it got lowered to 5€, so will Nier:Automata as well, though the profitability on those remaining numbers would of course be much lower. As such the “success” is already confirmed.

However, for the glory of mankind, one should make sure as many people as possible is given the opportunity to play this game sooner or later in my view (hopefully sooner, as this game is spoiler sensitive, and we know countless references will begin to pop up soon). Even if it would be a late sale down the line, or heck even a borrowed copy from your neighbor or family member. This is such a unique gem, a true spiritually shacking moment, and it would be cruel to deny anyone this experience if they are to seek it out of their own will.

  • EinMugenTenshin

Nier:Automata sequel or a completely new story would be better in my view.

We can have HD remasters, etc. for the previous games though, np there. Drakengard 4 also sounds interesting, but it wouldn’t be possible because…
    *SPOILER*
( …because we already knows what happens. The world history regarding mankind has already been explained in out most detail, unless he’d want to shift timelines).
    *SPOILER*

  • Verus

i won’t disagree with that. however i’d still rather have remastered ps2 games than nier that, while clunky still isn’t as awful as the drakengard series.
    those need honest remastering.

It’s good if you don’t count other Square games that have sold more than that. But considering those games aren’t as Niche as Neir is, I guess it is pretty good.

  • Taro’s games in general are considered very niche, and I would argue the payoff in advertising and working with Platinum helped boost word of mouth for most people.

  • Jack Thompson

Doesn’t Taro have a good friend in the industry that helps him? I can’t recall his name.

  • Jack Thompson

I don’t see it saying that anywhere. Unless specified otherwise, I’d assume worldwide sales include Japan and Asia.

  • Jack Thompson

Not just considering that it’s niche, but considering it doesn’t have the same budget as the blockbuster titles either. If it did, the game would be a fair bit larger. It’s definitely a 9/10, but it’s not very big.

  • I was wondering that in the first place, actually, but I wasn’t clear enough. My bad!

  • Klarktastic

“Drakengard 1 didn’t age well and a remake from the ground up would be amazing.”
    He told you right there.
Go and try play drakengard today.
Its basically unplayable. If it was remade as a modern game it could be pretty good.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

Nah. Beat it months ago and it was just fine. Even without the camera fixes in the EU version.

  • Fenrir007

It would be nice if a Nier remaster also had the japanese bishie as an option for us to play in the west. Just make it a full package of sorts.

  • Loli de 42 Anos

because Not many people had the oportunity to play it (Including myself), and to be honest, after watching a Let’s play of it, it haven’t aged well. the first NieR can be ported over to the PS4 relatively easily, and the same goes for Drakengard 3 (it just needs fixes on the framerate and it would be good to go), Still, there are many interesting elements in that game’s story that would look amazing on curent gen. NieR Automata had a huge impact due to it’s uniqueness and the first Drakengard have more of that, but doesn’t have the gameplay to hold it together.

Bottom line is, I want a “New” Drakengard 1. recreated from the ground up to introduce that universe to wider audience, now that the Taro & Platinum combo proved successful once, let them properly present the Drakengard universe to the rest of the world before moving forward with a Drakengard 4.

You can’t turn your camera 360 degrees, the draw distance is extremely tiny, there are a total of two attacks, and most enemies are exactly the same. Its like Dynasty Warriors, which is already mediocre, but worst. It absolutely could use an update as a game.

  • Tristan (Chili1)

DR2 is also extremely expensive and hard to obtain, and some may want to see what happens after Ending A of Drakengard 1 regardless. Plus the music in DR2 is gr8
