I don’t get what they are going for with this game every character has ugly costume designs. They have like New 52 designs but cranked up to 12, because excessive panel lines aren’t enough lets go way overboard.

  • NukeA6

I don’t like that face. That’s that stuff that belongs to an aging slut and not some youthful seductress.

  • ProxyDoug

In the early days of cinema, some actresses would have their own personal photography professionals accompanying them to each film because they knew how to light their faces and how to make them look their best. I think NetherRealm got that backwards.

  • ProxyDoug

It weird that comparing to ME: Andromeda or the new Star Wars, their faces actually look very realistic and not some Tumblr thing brought to life, but I think they don’t know how to light them properly and also have that excessive gloss all the time.

  • Mr0303

The reason is quite obvious – DLC.

  • Mr0303

“Come to me, babe!” – phrasing.

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)
  • Tallcat

Holy shit these are the ugliest characters.

  • Cats736

    Bane

  • Mr0303

    Thanks, I’ve misheard.

Ivy has always been an aging slut in the Batman universe.

  • OldPalpy

    He’s a big guy

  • Madbrainbox

I was thinking she doesn’t look as horrible as most of the other characters but when you put it like that..

  • NukeA6

Yet she doesn’t look older than someone in their early 20s.

  • Nalferd

Ugly Face Syndrome all over again

  • Eden

I’m not even mad at the faces anymore after seeing Mass Effect: Androgynous…

No, the designs of Poison Ivy you posted in the images are outdated, and it’s unacceptable in this day and age.

Sickeningly sexualized and just creates body images for women which is virtually impossible to achieve or have.

NetherRealm has done wonders for the industry by listening to the criticism and feedback a few years ago over the sexist designs of the female ninjas (forget their names) in the other fighting game.

Having said that, the Poison Ivy shown in the video is still far too sexualized though. She’s basically wearing nothing more than a leotard with virtually nothing on the chest, which shows her thighs, buttocks and cleavage.

    Disappointing from NetherRealm. Again.

  • Loli de 42 Anos

well, credit were it’s due, they made her look pretty good there.

  • Loli de 42 Anos

    … I can’t tell if you’re being ironic.

  • Lucy Taylor

Judging by the comments sections, I find it extremely laughable on how female characters are automatically bad if they don’t give the male audience a boner.

It’s going to take some time for you guys to get used to “bad” or “ugly” female characters. I’m sure you can do it eventually.

  • Loli de 42 Anos

Lucy, it’s a matter of design. most of the models look uncanny, they push for realism yet can’t quite get there and the faces look off as a result. you NEVER want your characters to look uncanny, take the Disney’s hunchback of Notredame as an example: they took great care to make Quasimodo Ugly, but easy on the eyes. which is the oposite netherrealms had been doing so far.

that doesn’t apply only to the females, but since most of the male characters have they’re faces covered in masks or just unrealistic faces (Like Scarecrow or swamp thing) it’s not as noticable.

Poison Ivy has always been a tool for heteropatriachal oppression, the evil seductress trope is designed to subjugate womyn and turn them into perpetually barefoot pregnant slaves. It falsely reinforces the heteronormative ciscapitalist manspreadist idea that womyn use their sex appeal to ensnare and use men. The peepee poopoo pissbaby manchild pissy manbaby poop pissboys feel so entitled to their boners they think they should be able to literally rape every womyn in the world by playing this manhegemonic maleoppressive mancentric mangame with mandesigns that manappeal to heteromanboydudes. Well tough luck, now she’s a tranny, where is your God now?

It’s not a matter of the character not being pleasing to look at in a sexual manner, but simply being unappealing in design in general. Some consider it “ugly”, others say that there’s something “off”, but there is definitely a difference in design that many people do not like about.

You can argue that a lot of focus have been on the female characters, and that makes sense though considering the majority of the fans/consumers interested in the game are male and we’re looking at characters that were meant to look attractive. But that doesn’t change the fact that many feel the same issues with the male character designs as well.

  • Feminazis don’t play games, you’re not fooling anyone.

  • Lucy Taylor

Western AAA games developers and publishers catering to female audiences, feminists and minorities says otherwise.

Try to not use the “muh feminists/sjws not do play games” myth. It’s sooo 2013 and it makes you look stupid.

  • AAA developers/publishes catering to not market majority audiences? Name one whore.

  • Lucy Taylor

Mass Effect Andromeda, Horizon Zero Dawn, Star Wars Battlefront 2, ROTTR, etc. Oh, and from what I hear, in the next Uncharted game, you will only be able to play as a female protagonist, with no male protagonist to choose from. ^_^

Virtually all Western developers and publishers have realized the fact that women and minorities are gamers and customers too.

Judging from the progress of the Western video games industry right now, I can safely say that Western developers are on the side of us, catering to minorities and female audiences.

You however, cannot say that they’re on your side. And they will never been on your side again, because they want to make games that appeal to EVERYONE.

Drop the dinosaur mentality and get with the times. Otherwise you’ll be a very miserable person for the rest of your life.

  • Mighty No. 56008

All of those games you listed are clearly still marketed to the general gaming audience. Yes they are purposefully trying to be inclusive and diverse, but none of those games are directly aimed at the feminist/LGBT/whatever audience.

As for you, you should really drop the mentality of the “us vs. them” mentality. Go and enjoy your “Gone Home” type games while some of us are looking forward to the next Senran Kagura. If “diversity” is the issue, then I don’t see why the market can’t have games that come from either ends of the spectrum since the consumers would have a diverse taste.

I want to believe you’re a troll but I love how one thinks they can speak for all women. All women don’t see that as sexist. Plenty of women, myself included love to look at attractive females. I much prefer the look and art of the pictures posted than that compared to the video. If women can’t discern a fantasy body from reality then there are underlying issues

  • There is a difference between CATERING & PANDERING. Female protagonists are not even remotely new, Lara Croft & Samus Aren being prime example – which if you didn’t know it’s overwhelmingly men buying their games (same with Ygritte the RoboDino hunter). Pandering is what Andromeda is which is why it’s been crucified by criticism (btw the default character is a WHITE. CIS. MAN.. just like the majority of the consumer base) with it’s shoehorned tranny gender pronoun bollox which they had to apologise for. I can’t judge Battlefront for it isn’t even out yet (though it’s looking like PANDERING).

Actual devs don’t give a sh’t about your identity politics, like the Japanese hence your emphasis on Western (who also have actual devs among them). They don’t care if Wimminz & Oppressed peeps play games, they just want to make them hence we have games like The Witcher, Red Dead, Batman Arkham, Metal Gear, fu’king Mario oh and glorious Dead or Alive (t’tty version ).
